Help! Have just spent $500 on a carseat and now I don't need it!

Can't quite believe how I ended up in this situation... but here's the story. Moved from UK to Aust last year and brought our fab maxi cosi tobi carseat with us. After a recent plane journey, I noticed the back casing of the carseat had come loose. I phoned the ambulance service here (they check that carseats are installed correctly) and they told me that the carseat wouldn't be safe. So I went out and bought a new one... to the tune of $500. The ambulance service has a very long waiting list to get carseats checked, so I phoned a local mechanic who is licensed to install them. He came round this morning, installed the new one and checked the old one... after popping a new screw in the back casing he told me it's completely fine. Gah!!! I haven't used the new one yet... but the receipt from the shop says they don't do refunds if you change your mind. DH is going to go spare when he finds out!

Can you exchange it for something else? Sometimes shops will do an exchange when they won't do a refund.
