Hey all. Does anyone know why my little ones skin under the nails is a bit darker or has anyone seen anything similar? It looks a bit worse in real life and few people around me have noticed and asked me too and my anxious brain is now set off 🥲. I think most likely hyper pigmentation but it changed colour quite quickly (I think, my memory is a blur in this newborn phase) so just just wondering. TIA x

Can't see anything out of the ordinary at all. 😊

My girls are mixed race and a lot of people told me that was an indicator of their skin colour when they were older! And the tops of their ears!
I have no idea if it’s true but my youngest is 5 weeks old and the skin is much darker in both those places than anywhere else

Yess myself and baby are Indian! And I know on my skin I have lots of hyperpigmentation everywhere- I do think it's just that! Just wanted my mind at ease as lots of people kept noticing it and asking me so it got me thinking

Hey,
Can you please tell did this disappear or got lighter ? My daughter has the same discolouration! Is it their original skin colour which is coming up ? Was this your daughters original skin colour ?

Miamoo134 · 10/05/2024 11:40

@Mummylove123 hey. My LO still has this discolouration under his nails - I think it's because his dad has similar hyperpigmentation on his too so possibly just genetic. I think as his fingers and hands grow over time it won't look so prominent :)

You don't mean underneath the nails right*? Just below the nail bed? That's very normal in dark skinned people. If you are also a person of colour surely you have seen this. Why would anyone be alarmed. Try and search for pictures online or look at your family members / friends.

It's not discolouration . Discolouration means - the act of changing the natural colour of something by making it duller or dingier or unnatural or faded.

It is perfectly normal and natural. And no it won't change - your child will likely be that colour when they go in the sun. That's their natural complexion.

Yep that makes sense!

It has changed quite a bit much less noticeable! I think maybe cos his hands were small and chubby and as he's growing its prob changed but yeah!
