Grandparents don't speak English, ds won't speak French ...

He's only 2 and a half, he understands French perfectly but won't speak it at the moment, apart from the odd non and oui. His English is pretty advanced, I think, and he understands that there is French and English and happily tells you which is which. He used to have pretty equal vocab in both, but since he's been making phrases he's stopped the French. How can we get him to make the leap to speaking (we both speak French at home) - his adoring grandparents don't speak English at all and are a bit sad about it!

Aw bless him - he's only 2 and a half, many toddlers haven't mastered one language yet!

I would just give him time, he will say more when he feels ready

i guess we are asking a bit much! it's just he's very clear in English and they wish they could chat to him ... thank you!

If you & your husband speak French between you at home, it should be fairly easy to get him to speak French - ignore English phrases and respond only when he speaks French. This is better done by the native French speaker (I am assuming one of you is actually French).

In addition, leave him with grandparents once or twice a week, on a regular basis. Go out for dinner, watch a movie. Since they don't speak any English, he will very quickly start speaking French.

Once he's realised that he won't get what he wants from his grand parents if he doesn't use the right language my guess is that he'll soon do it
Don't worry, he's still very young. And stick to your guns, he's very lucky to be able to speak 2 languages from birth
