Large chicken pox scar

hookpan · 18/04/2023 18:30

My son had chicken pox about 3-4 weeks ago and didn't get many spots but the ones he did were huge. Unfortunately one on his forehead has left a large crater 😖

I am putting dermatix silicone gel on it twice a day. But I feel so awful about it everytime I look at it, I worry it will never look any better.

In harsh light and sunlight it looks even worse and more concave.

Has anyone's child ever had a similar sized pox scar that has improved over time? I know it won't disappear but some stories about them healing and looking less prominent would make me feel so much better!! 😖🙏🏻

It will be less noticeable as he grows.
I can clearly see a crater mark after 6years from when my child had chicken pox.
I never used any creams, etc, because I hoped it would fade.
It has not, but it will be character to his already cute face.
Do not worry.

Frogpond · 07/07/2023 06:35

I have the same. It fades and becomes less noticeable over time.

LilyPad150 · 07/07/2023 06:38

Thanks all for your responses and glad it has improved for him @hookpan

These are my DDs smaller ones, one still scabbing but a bit worried about the others just because they are right on her forehead.

@LilyPad150 my youngest son had one mark on his forehead similar in size to your little one. It has almost completely faded and I've not put anything on his (he wouldn't let me put the gel on 🙄).

I reckon they will fade away to almost nothing 👍🏻

Thanks for responding @hookpan .. feeling a bit less worried now!

Updated pic. Still quite pink but as you can see a lot shallower. Ignore the little pimple marks inside - I don't believe this is typical for chickenpox scars - my son got hit in the new scar by a swing which I think has formed these marks (like scars within a scar 🥴) But overall it has become flatter. Once it is skin colour it won't be as obvious hopefully.

Thanks so much for the updated pic. Definitely looks shallower and less pink. My DD’s has started to form a pimple inside one of the dents too. Not sure why 🤔

@hookpan forgot to tag you in the above post

hookpan · 25/07/2023 14:35

Hey @LilyPad150 I wonder if the pimple bits are new skin forming within the scar? I thought it was because he bashed his head on swing but now I'm wondering if it is a scar thing now I've seen your pics!

@hookpan I am secretly hoping so. At first I thought it was a pimple from using bio oil so switched to dermatix silicone gel and it has just got bigger since. No signs of the sides filling out yet but only been around 7 weeks since she had chicken pox so I’m hoping and praying for the best!

Aljay91 · 26/07/2023 00:06

I wonder how long it takes for these scars to turn flesh coloured. DD scar is now 8 months old and still very pink, especially if she cries or gets a bit warm. I know they can continue to mature up to 12 months so will worry after that.

unvillage · 26/07/2023 00:20

The pimples are probably from the products you're slathering on and overloading his skin. You can overmoisturise, and silicone clogs pores anyway, as it does hair. SPF when he's out and a gentle moisturiser without silicones every morning and night. Simple moisturisers are nice.

Valera · 30/08/2023 12:45

Hello @hookpan , do you have any updates? We have a fresh scar like yours, and I get mixed instructions from dermatologist (says start with contractubex scar cream) and pediatrician (says wait for redness to go)..

hookpan · 30/08/2023 13:31

@Valera the pimples burst on holiday from having sun cream on every day. So I put sudocrem on it and after doing so noticed a big difference in the appearance of the scar. So I've stopped using the silicone gel and now use a bit of sudocrem every night. It has definitely reduced the redness. So perhaps you could try this first and once redness gone use the silicone xx

I had multiple chicken pox scars on my face as a child. My parents didn't do anything to help the scarring and whilst you could see them, they didn't overly trouble me then and as an adult they are hardly noticeable at all. Lots of children end up with scars of some sort on their faces or have moles or birth marks. Whats important is that you don't make them feel insecure about them and make them proud of their faces, chicken pox scars at all.

brisedusoir · 30/08/2023 13:42

I had really bad chicken pox and I don't think my parents did much for my scars. I'm 33 now and have quite a few scars on my arms, legs and tummy ... however I really like them as strange as that might sound.

Valera · 30/08/2023 15:36

@hookpan Thank you, never really thought about this option.. Besides, have you noticed a change in depth, size? It has been a week in this topic, trying to do the right thing, feeling guilty and afraid how it will develop.. i am not sure ours (very much like yours) is deep pitted, it is not a dot but more like a stain and I am afraid it will widen..

@itshappened Thank you so much for reassurance! I also have one on the side of my nose and did not bother..

Hers is on the cheek, where the skin is thicker and she knocked of a scab😞 She also has it on forehead but it is not so big and I do not worry. Od course I will give her all the tools to deal with it and I know there are so many worse things, but right now I am in the acceptance phase first time ever regarding my kids.

Valera · 30/08/2023 15:39

@brisedusoir Thank you for this, too! I also do not mind my scars on face/body at all.

@LilyPad150 are there maybe some updates from your side? Thanks a lot

hookpan · 30/08/2023 16:47

@Valera it looks slightly more smoothed out/ less of a crevice but only a little since I started using sudocrem. The main difference is the colour being paler.

Hi @Valera, here is a pic about 8 weeks apart. I have kept using silicone gel twice a day and have put a moisturiser on before bed. Have noticed a big improvement 🤞🏼 in depth and colour. Hope this helps.

Hi @LilyPad150 , thanks a lot and so glad for you! Imagine it in a year😊.

one more question, do you have a silverish color on the scars? I can’t see it on pics. We do have it and I worry that means the end od healing.. I do not know..

LilyPad150 · 30/08/2023 20:35

@Valera fingers crossed they keep filling in, I wish I had known 8 weeks ago how much better they would look already 🙈

My son was covered in silvery marks after he had chicken pox and they faded after about 2-3 months. You can barely see them anymore and I only notice because I know where they are, no one else around him notices them. They looked similar to your LOs, hopefully they’ll do the same 🤞🏼

hookpan · 24/09/2023 17:28

Some update photos. It's looking better and better. Sudocrem seems to be making the most difference! I put it on before bed every night

Hi! How long did it take for the spots on her face to fade?

LoudFox · 15/05/2024 08:19

@hookpan May I ask how your sons scar is doing now, almost a year on? My 1yo have a very similar, although a bit smaller, scar in the same location after CP 6 weeks ago😢
