When did your baby drop to 1 nap?

Hello,

DS has just turned 12m. He is fighting naps hard for the last few weeks. Completely refused his second nap today, despite me trying for over an hour and despite being fed, changed, white noise etc etc. Is now merrily playing with a tractor, I am very annoyed haha.

When did your babies drop to just one nap a day? I don't mind him just having one, but isn't he a little young for that?

Thanks!

My son was about 15 months when he dropped his second nap so 12 months doesn't sound too early really. He's now 2 and his fighting his afternoon nap. Going to be sad when that goes Confused

BeanieTeen · 28/07/2022 14:41

About 13 or 14 months I think.

MolliciousIntent · 28/07/2022 14:41

DD was 9m. Second nap became a bastard and bedtime went to shit so we just pushed the first nap back to lunchtime and then powered her through.

1 or slightly just before.

DC1was 15 months and wasn’t really ready- it was forced by the daycare routine. DC2 was very much ready at 12 months. When they’re fighting it, it’s generally a sign!

Inthesky42 · 28/07/2022 14:44

15 months is normal. They got through a bit of a regression at 12 months where they don't want to sleep but they still need it. Do everything to get the 2nd nap if you can, we have to go for a walk in the buggy! They should be awake max 3-4hrs at this age so can't really make it with one nap yet.

Lots of replies! Thank you 🙂A real variety in the answers as well which is reassuring if he is done with 2 naps, although I will try to persist for a while longer.

My Son was 6 months when he dropped to one nap.

He started napping in his own cot at 6 months and would sleep for 2.5hrs instead of his usual 2/3 45min-1hr naps. I personally preferred it that way because it meant we could do stuff in the morning and afternoon without worrying about his naps but I just followed his lead and he's been happy with 1 nap since 6 months. He's 14 months now and usually still has 1 nap but for around 1.5hrs

TheOceanClub · 28/07/2022 15:11

Couple of days after his 1st birthday.

Honaloulou · 28/07/2022 15:17

DD was late - about 20 months. But she's always been a little and often sleeper (🥱).

She's still napping now at 2.8, when lots of her buddies have dropped it completely.

newhere989 · 28/07/2022 15:22

About 7 months

AliceW89 · 28/07/2022 15:34

15 months, although I think he could have dropped to one sooner in hindsight. The morning one had to be 20 mins max by the end, or the afternoon one didn’t happen.

DandelionNumber12 · 28/07/2022 15:38

Gosh 6m!

I'm looking forward to it really as it'll make meeting friends easier, it's hard to get him to sleep anywhere other than his own cot. But I also want him to be ready. I was surprised last weekend. We were away from home and he managed v well on much less sleep than usual. He was definitely much more tired at bedtime though. I don't want him to feel grotty.

All 4 of mine were pretty much bang on 12 months - they would occasionally have a 5 minute nap on the way back from the school run - at 12 months the nap tended to be 12-2.45 then it got pushed back later after about 6 months to 1.30-2.45 ish - then at 2 they pretty much all stopped napping as they weren’t going to sleep until gone 9pm even with a short nap!!

luxxlisbon · 28/07/2022 15:59

They should be awake max 3-4hrs at this age so can't really make it with one nap yet.

No way, that is insanely short for a 1 year old!
I imagine the vast majority of 12mo can do considerably longer.

OP at 12 months we flick between 1 and 2 depending on the day and length of nap. Most days it’s 1 nap with maybe 2 days including an extra one.
If you are starting to see a problem with sleep it wouldn’t hurt to try dropping to 1.

Timeturnerplease · 28/07/2022 16:40

11mo for DD1. Weirdly, DD2 is 11mo and just dropped to one nap. I didn’t realise they were the exact same age until I started replying to this post. Spooky.

DandelionNumber12 · 28/07/2022 16:40

@luxxlisbon thanks. Yes I was just thinking, the days he wakes up at 7am I'll try one nap and a slightly earlier bed time. If he wakes at 6am I'll stick with 2 naps 🙂

Thanks everyone really helpful

10m sadly. But that's par for the course with my others. They usually stop napping completely before 2.

WorkEvent · 28/07/2022 17:27

Both of mine were under 1. I never really forced naps.

Vicky1989x · 28/07/2022 20:58

Around 15 months but she was doing the same as your DS at 12 months - turned out to be a sleep regression and happily went back to 2 naps after a couple of weeks.

Cyw2018 · 28/07/2022 21:01

10 months, but often she would nap for 4 hours.

VoyageInTheDark · 28/07/2022 21:09

Dd1 dropped it at 12 months and it seemed really early compared to other people's babies. Dd2 is 13 months and takes ages to get to sleep at night so she will probably be dropping it soon.

This thread makes me feel a bit better knowing that others dropped to one nap around the same time!

AcceptYourself · 28/07/2022 21:14

About 9-10 months

Ihaveoflate · 28/07/2022 22:53

15 months and for ages before that the morning one was no more than a cat nap just to get her through to the afternoon. I probably could have forced the issue sooner but I think she needed the sleep.

Sbena · 29/07/2022 08:32

On his birthday, but he needed to drop it a few weeks ago. I made him keep it because of reasons, but it sure made bedtime a b!tch
