How to ensure children have good self-esteem

Inspired by another thread.
I have terrible self-esteem - always have done - and so scared that my children will be the same as it affects so much in life.
Are there ways I can make sure they have good self-esteem?

I think this is a tough one, because I want to say teach them to not care why people think of them. But we have rules and laws, so we can't just do what we want and act without thinking. So maybe it should be teach them to value themselves. But what does that really mean?

I have pretty good self esteem usually, but been dieting and had a bad day. As for me, I care about how I look, but I don't care what other people think about how I look. I accept I cannot control other peoples opinions.
