Heavy bleeding after medical abortion

Hoping someone has been through the same and can put my mind at rest!

I found out I was pregnant a few weeks ago and made the extremely difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy. I had a baby 6 months ago and we are not in a position to have another one at the moment. Hardest decision of my life and not something I ever thought I would do.

I went through with it last Wednesday at home, taking the oral tablet and then inserting 4 more as instructed. I had heavy bleeding that day, passing large clots, but with no pain surprisingly.
The next 2 days I was able to go out and about, with the bleeding easing up to be just like a manageable normal period.
I woke up Saturday morning and the bleeding was horrendous! Couldn’t stand up and walk to the other side of the room without having to run to the toilet cause I was so uncomfortable with the amount of blood loss and lots of clots again, not as big as before but still bigger than normal and big enough for me to be concerned.
I called the original clinic which told me to go to a&e. I went it and had an internal scan which showed everything had passed and I was no longer pregnant and advised the bleeding should now ease. It did slightly got the rest of the day.
I woke up Sunday and the same thing happened again so I called the same ward and went back in. Had another scan to double check and they confirmed that everything had passed and they were unsure why this was happening. I was prescribed tablets to slow the bleeding down, which helped, but this morning it is slightly better but I am still passing clots like an extremely heavy period. I am so worried something is wrong. Just wanted to see if anyone has experienced the same? I don’t want to go back into hospital again and leave my baby for a third day. They have also put me on iron tablets as my blood count is so low now

Thank you in advance!

Hi I'm sorry that sounds very tough. I think you do bleed quite a lot but I'm not sure. It might be worth calling your GP or 111. Take good care of yourself!!

I think it also depends how far along you were. The further into the pregnancy the more bleeding I guess.

Only 5 weeks so I wouldn’t have thought it would be this much. Just such a worry. Thank you for replying

Hey, sorry I have no experience of abortion so cannot help but I have a consultation on the phone Thursday with MSI. I am 6 weeks and terrified at the thought of a medical abortion. I’m still in two minds whether to keep the baby or not. It’s all down to finances unfortunately. I have 2 children already; aged 3 and 2. So it’s the whole childcare / work issue. Anyway, could you still go out and about when you did the medical or did you need to stay at home
For couple days? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, hope you’re ok x

Please don’t let my post scare you! I’m sure what I’ve been through is rare, as none of it was spoke about with me beforehand. I went with MSI too and they were all really lovely and friendly.
So I had to go in for a scan, as I had a baby 6 months ago, which ended up being an internal one as I was so early on. I was then given a tablet to take at home and then a further 4 to insert 24 - 48 hours later. After taking the first tablet I was able to go about as normal, however I did get some light bleeding a couple of hours before I was due to insert the further 4 tablets. After inserting the 4, things kicked in within a hour and I was losing large clots, but with no pain. The next 2 days it was like a normal period and then my issues started on Saturday.
Like I say it’s probably very rare but just worth addressing with them. I hope it all goes okay for you whichever decision you make xx

Thank you for responding and putting me at ease. I understand you only hear the worst on here. People rarely report when things go smoothly do they. Did you have to wait a while with MSI? I’ve been waiting almost 2 weeks just for the telephone consultation. I’ll be 6.5 weeks by the time I speak with them. How quickly after do you receive pills? Sorry for all the questions! Just so helpful to get insight from someone who has been through it recently. Xx

Don’t be silly ask as many as you want! I wish I had had someone in the same situation to talk to before.
I luckily got a cancellation so didn’t have. To wait long, for a phone call and then it was 5 days from then that I went to the clinic. You may not even need to do that if you don’t have any medical conditions, or a recent pregnancy like I did. They can send you tablets, or you can collect them xx

Thank you so much. I’m 90% there making a decision on terminating. I don’t think I could physically, mentally or financially manage three children under 4! It’s really sad as I always thought I wanted a bigger family and it could be the girl I always wanted, but it could also be a boy. Times are different aren’t they, people just can’t afford large families! Hope you’re recovering ok? X

Hi, just reading this thread. I'm in the same situation- wondering if you went through with it and how it was? Financially we can't afford another child (already have a 3 and 1 year old), so im thinking a termination is the best decision- but I'm terrified

@Anon2603 hey, haven’t had my appointment with Mary Stopes yet. I contacted them 15th January and my appointment is Tuesday 8th February. I had a tel consultation 27th jan. I think the delay is beyond unacceptable. It’s been a distressing time for me. I’m 8 weeks now. How far gone are you? It’s a tough time. I just don’t know if I’m up to having three children under age 4! My partner works on call and isn’t around all the time. Hope you’re ok x

Hey, hope your appointment was ok today. I can't believe it's taken you so long for your appointment- that must be really stressful for you. Im still really early - to early to test- but have all the pregnancy symptoms I had from my last two - so I know (but hoping it's not) that it's going to be positive. Ill need to get into contact with Marie stopes as soon as I get confirmation- Im already stressed and I don't think I could wait as long as you have done x

Hi, very similar thing is happening to me 3 days after the medical abortion. It was just one off bleeding but extremely a lot and passing cloth. Now the bleeding calmed down but I am not sure if I should be concerned. I am a bir scared to sleep after seeing tha amount in such a short period. I am on my own with my daughter so I don’t want to go to A&E and the bleeding is stopped. It would be great to hear from you. @K0724

Unsureofitall · 13/12/2022 22:25

Hi,

This happened to me after my medical abortion last year. I was fine in the end and didn't attend a&e. I probably should have cause the bleeding was so bad it was coming out of me like urine. Very scary. All was okay though. I think if it's calmed down just keep an eye on it. If it continues tomorrow call the clinic or go to a&e. Maybe eat something to get your sugars back up if you've lost a lot of blood.

ece123 · 13/12/2022 22:48

Thanks @Unsureofitall I will call them tomorrow. The bleeding is back to normal similar to my period after the scary flooding that happened 3 hours ago.

Nupas has got a detailed explanation of what kind of bleeing is normal and what is not in the link below for those who come here for some advice.
