11 month old not moving - so worried 😟

Hi all,

I am not sure if anyone can help here but I am becoming so worried about my 11 month old. He is such a gorgeous, slightly grumpy (!) boy who loves being with his family but at his review, he failed his gross motor skills section and the HV said he would be reviewed in again in a couple of months.
He just doesn’t move. He sits up well and can bend one leg in but he doesn’t roll, crawl, pull himself up or do anything mobile. If you put him on all fours, he just slides down onto his tummy and cries.
We have tried putting toys out of reach but he just loses interest if he can’t reach them. If I place him standing against the sofa, he will remain standing but won’t move. Sometimes his feet are flat, sometimes he is on his toes. He has a walker which he can hold on to but again, doesn’t do anything on it.
I know some babies don’t crawl and to be honest, that isn’t the bit I am worried about. It’s more the lack of pulling up etc as I made the mistake of googling and now I am worried something is seriously wrong.

I am so sorry for the long post. If anyone has any words of wisdom, I would truly appreciate it.

This is in the realm of normal from my experience. My second is the same age and has only just started moving. She did it one day when we put chocolate biscuits just out of reach. I also know a perfectly fine three year old who didn't move until well gone 1.

One of mine didn't bum shuffle until over 12 months, never crawled and finally walked at 20 months. You'd never know now to look at them!!

But as others have said speak to your health visitor.

My DS was similar and I know what a worry it can be when you’re comparing to younger babies!
My DS only rolled over at 12 months and bum shuffled from 15 months. He never attempted crawling. He started walking unaided at 19.5 months and only started pulling to stand at 21 months!
He is now 2 and walking is great, he skipped the stumbling toddler stage and went straight to walking confidently. However he is still behind on gross motor skills (doesn’t run or climb much yet)but is slowly catching up.

He was referred to physio appointment and was finally seen just after he started walking! They commented that his head is large compared to his body weight and that his centre of gravity was off and that is why he has been slow to develop, but all normal and discharged him.
Hope you can get advice from HV if needed but try not to worry and compare, even though it’s hard!

My toddler didn’t start crawling until 14-15 months. Before he started to crawl he was barely moving and I was going mad with worry. He’s now 20 months and can pull up to stand, climb and cruise, but he’s still not walking. We were referred to a physio who seems happy so far, because she can see that he is progressing albeit slowly. Now he’s cruising I have faith that he will get there, but it could take a while.

My 11 month old is the same and seeing a physio on Wednesday, I'll let you know what they say!

NoNameHere12

In my experience they either walk or talk but never both. My eldest was a good talker, but late to moving about and walking, my youngest moved well and walked early, but didn’t speak until she was 3.5/4!

I wouldn’t worry, they do catch up eventually. I know it’s hard but try not to stress over it.

I think NoNameHere12 is onto something there. I’ve noticed that with babies over the years.

My dd was great at her gross motor skills and very active but didn’t seem interested in talking. I was so worried. I just wanted her to talk and did lots of activities to encourage her to talk.

Now, she talks non stop and I have to remind myself how much I wanted her to talk any time I just want some piece and quiet. Grin

Neither DSs was on the move until about 13 months, they both walked fairly late too but by 18 months so within ‘normal’ - I don’t think they’ll ever be Olympians but can both hold their own on the sports field. I know it’s difficult but please don’t fret.

DD sat well at 7-8 months but had little interest in moving. She hated tummy time and I didn’t push it either. She eventually crawled at 14 months ( slowly and not very often) and walked at 20 months. She wouldn’t bear any weight on her legs until well over a year. She was really easy - very happy to sit exploring a pile of toys for ages!

Ring the healthy visitor. Does he attend nursery and are they concerned? My eldest didn’t even shift an inch until 12.5 months old and didn’t stand up until he was walking at 16 months!! His younger brother crawled at 6 months and walked at 10 months. Complete opposites! It is really tough though because once you’ve got a worry it’s there x
