Did moving from cot to bed improve your toddlers sleep or make it worse?

My DD will be 3 in October and we've had night wakings for 3 months for no apparent reason, probably a phase.

But thinking of moving her to a bed as shes almost 3 and have nothing to lose.

Did you find sleep improved in a bed or got worse?

Yes, all 5 of ours have slept better in their single beds than they did the cot-beds.
The younger they are the more likely they are to fall out the side so a safety bar is wise.

Londonlady92 · 02/08/2021 15:18

@Chelyanne did it stop night wakings for any of them?

Our eldest spent more time in our bed than her own until she got the single. Same with youngest of our twins, often had her climb in ours during the night but it's a rarity now they are in big beds.

I moved DD last month. Shes 21 months and it did improve her sleeping, even sleeping through for the first time ever, until 8 teeth appeared at the same time. She still feeds overnight so we are weaning from this weekend.

My terrible sleeper moved into a cotbed at the 22 months and started sleeping through. Unfortunately sleeping through seemed to stop when he potty trained. He moved into a single bed at 3, that didn't seem to affect him.

Opalfeet · 02/08/2021 15:25

Got worse once he realised he could get out of bed 🤣

Londonlady92 · 03/08/2021 06:09

Shes been a nightmare for weeks with night waking i feel like I have no other option to try:(

My DS was 2 when we moved him to a single bed also he was waking up on the night needed to be rocked back to sleep and for 2yo he's really big for his age and we was struggling but when we moved him he started sleeping straight through again.

We think he may off been waking himself hitting the bars on the cot

Hissysnake · 03/08/2021 07:01

Sleep stayed exactly the same for my DC when they went into their beds.

At 3YO, they're old enough to tell you what's woken them surely?

What do you do when she wakes up?

I know folk on here probably think this is really cruel but we have made very clear to ours that he is only to wake us up if he isn't feeling well or is scared. If he just wakes up, he needs to stay in bed until his gro clock shows morning time. We have had some messing about but he doesn't wake us up just because any more.

Londonlady92 · 03/08/2021 10:33

@Hissysnake she was born with cleft palate so her speech isn't what my DS or any other normal almost 3 year olds would be unfortunately.

@MattyGroves i never let her get out i just go in and tell her its bedtime and time for sleep, sometimes it works sometimes shes awake for 2 hours!

My DD stayed the same to be honest. She woke at night in the cot bed, still does in the single bed most nights...she's 3.5.

Londonlady92 · 04/08/2021 09:01

I'm exhausted we've juet bought the single mattress and going to put it up the weekend. Thinking of keeping the cotbed together just incase

Our son and our friends tended to find they slept better. We had a stair gate on his bedroom door too so that if he did start to wander couldn't leave the room and knew he was safe.

Cric · 04/08/2021 09:22

DD- cot - cotbed was awful. She was a good sleeper but could climb out the cot and so moved to cot bed to keep her safe. Very quickly moved to single bed and went back to being a great sleeper! So with our son we didn't bother with the cot bed bit!
DS has never slept through the night (he suffers badly with eczema and wakes up itchy) and move made no difference.

Londonlady92 · 04/08/2021 14:37

This is giving me hope!

OP posts:
NautaOcts · 04/08/2021 16:20

Improved - I think she was getting too cramped
But it totally killed day time naps

Londonlady92 · 04/08/2021 16:38

@NautaOcts naps are long gone for us sadly!

MadameOvary81 · 04/08/2021 16:47

My DS sleep vastly improved in a bed. He was constantly fidgeting in the cot, banging himself off of the sides, which would wake him (and us!).

Londonlady92 · 04/08/2021 17:42

@MadameOvary81 can I ask what age your DS was when you made the switch?

OP posts:
MadameOvary81 · 04/08/2021 17:51

He was 2 years 2 months when we switched him. We would have moved him sooner, however I was certain he would start getting up and causing chaos with the newfound freedom...but it's been the opposite! He stays in bed until we get up and get him even if he's awake.

gogohm · 04/08/2021 18:22

My dd slept through a few months after moving to a bed, she was terrible until 2

Londonlady92 · 04/08/2021 18:56

Its the bedtime battles im nervous about, takes me 45 mins to get her to stop crying most nights!

OP posts:
Opalfeet · 05/08/2021 12:38

Londonlady92 · 05/08/2021 12:40
