Dummy?

What are the benefits of using a dummy?
For a breastfed baby especially?
DD is 9 weeks old, and fusses a lot during the night, and waking up very early, wondering if a dummy could help?

They can be great for assisting with more independent sleep. Babies love to suck - it’s hugely soothing to them.

My baby never accepted a dummy, but I often think my life would be easier if he would!

@Opalfeet

I have briefly tried to use one. I know lots of people who have. My point was b fed babies are just that...difficult to settle. I know lots of people who used dummies for sleep and their little ones were no better sleepers than mine ( if anything worse) once past the frequent night feeds.

Here's an article about dummy use and b feeding.

I've also read quite a bit about dummy use and SIDs and from what I read a dummy needs to be used at all sleep points inc naps otherwise it does not decrease risk of SIDs. The research suggests that baby was less likely to die from SIDs if it was last using a dummy when it went to sleep. However, this also suggests that those who use a dummy routinely, are at a higher risk if they don't use the dummy that night.

It’s settles them when upset and helps to fall asleep. My baby gave her dummy up at 14months. Just spat it out when I tried to give it for nap time and didn’t want it again. So it won’t necessarily be difficult to stop using it.

I find the dummy very beneficial primarily for soothing and contentment. My DS who can be needy often takes it especially around nap time and say out and about.
