My ds is 3.5 and still has a nappy at night. I have bought the pull up type and told him that he has to pull this type of nappy down and wee in the toilet before bed, in the morning, etc He does this, but his nappy is still soaked in the morning. I limit his drinks in the afternoon but he does have a cup of milk before bed

He is obviously not ready to abandon the nappy yet, but was just curious about your dc,s ages.

DD was dry at night just before her 3rd birthday/ Dry throught he day just after she was 2, but just wasn't ready for the night until September this year.
Wait until he's ready, I don't believe forcing the issue will do any good. As long as he's got access to a potty or the bathroom and you've talked him through what to do if he wakes needing to go, he'll do it in his own time.
We'd not long had our twins when dd decided that nappies were for babies and told me one night that she didn't need one anymore, so we went with it and she's only had about 3 accidents since.

Best of luck!

ds1 was about 5.5. We had been lifting him at about 11-12pm because it worked but have recently stopped and he has been fine (he will often wake of his own accord and go for a wee sometime during the night but not always). Very occasionally he wets himself, usually when he has been really tired at bedtime so I guess he is just sleeping very heavily and doesn't wake up. Last time the bed was really soaked was in the summer though.

ds2 we haven't tried yet.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Will consider it all. When I said I limit his drinks, I meant I do not allow him JUICE (which he will drink gallons of)- he has his bottle of water (in the fridge) whenever he wants it, as well as his night time milk. Sorry if that horrified any of you

I think he sometimes does wee in his nappy because he knows he can. I had not long put his nappy on tonight when he told me with a smile that he had a wee in it (even though I had checked he did not want a wee on the loo earlier). May leave it a bit longer after reading some of the posts and see if he gets bored of wearing them himself before.

DS2 and DD were dry at night before they were dry during the day, illustrating the hormone rather than training thing. In fact DS2 stopped wearing nappies in bed christmas '02, but didn't potty train until June '03! Very odd DCs I have

DD1 who is now 7 has not worn a nappy a night since she was about 3.5 but she gets up every single night to got to the toilet - somtimes twice. And has had a number of accidents.

DD2 who is now 3.5 was dry at night just after 2 and has never had an accident and never gets up to go to the loo.

They are all so different.

DS1 is 2.10m and has been out of nappies at night for 3 months now. After he potty trained 6m ago he was initially dry at night but everyone said you had to keep them in nappies at night for at least another year, so I kept putting one on at night.

After a while he got used to still being in a nappy at night so he weed in it. So we went cold turkey with a week of wet beds and since then I would say he wets the bed a little bit about once a week or 10 days(ie not a full wee, wakes up when he starts doing it and just goes to the loo). I am happy with that as one sheet is less washing than 7 or 10 nappies.
DISCLAIMER: However I do realise that all children are different so watch out for my threads on 'why can't I get my 7 year old dry at night' for ds2

my dd is 3.7 and still wears pull ups at night, mostly because i work nights and didnt want to be leaving it all to dh. i am starting new job soon and will be working in the day so planning to do it then. dont think i will bother with lifting her though as i want her to train her bladder herself.

pirategirl · 17/11/2007 23:57

my dd is 5, i am still waiting!

Ds trained well for the day at 3.5 years, and wore pullups till he was 6, then just gradually was dry in the mornings more often and I never worried too much as quite alot of our friends seemed to be the same and like you all say it is common for them to wet the bed till 6-7.
DD is 6 and has just a month or two ago stopped wearing the pullups even though she was usually dry for a while before I think she liked the safety!
TBH even though I absolutely never wet the bed from the age of 2-3 onwards, I just learned to expect the odd wet patch with kiddies as they are all different!

gigglewitch · 18/11/2007 00:48

DS1 at 3 yrs just after b/day - he just "DECIDED" (???) and did it
DS2 is now 4 ... still waiting
DD dry daytime 21months night 23 months - hooooraaayyyy!
