What time does you four year old go to bed and wake up the next day?

Hi

We are really struggling. Both children (4 and 1) have a bath at 6.30, bed at 7. Usually dd1 will play in her room for a bit until 7.30-8 then goes to sleep.

But, they are then up from anywhere between 4.30am -6.15 the next day FOR THE DAY!

Dd2 fine, she’s still a baby. But With both of them up at this time it is exhausting us, especially at the moment given all that is going on. She did the same pattern pre lockdown too.

Is she going to bed too early??

Thanks

I would say that's normal time for a 4 year old.
That's an early start tho ! I would let them get up that early x

SherryPalmer · 15/02/2021 06:09

Mine sleeps roughly 7-7 give or take an hour.

Gettingonabitnow · 15/02/2021 06:11

I know. I’ve been sat downstairs today with the 1 year old since 4.30, and can hear my partner sending the 4 year old back into her room since 5!

Would you do the same, encourage the 4 year old to stay in her room until a reasonable time? We are shattered.

My kids (4 years old/3 years old /21 months) go to bed around 6 45pm. They currently all sleep in the same room. The 2 older ones wake around 6 15am. The toddler unfortunately wakes around 5am but we quickly get her out. They have a gro clock in their room and the 2 older ones know not to mess around until the clock changes colour. Toddler doesn't yet understand!

oohmamama · 15/02/2021 06:16

7pm and up at 515-545. I'm still blaming the last clock change. We watch movies til a reasonable hour!

fitzbilly · 15/02/2021 06:20

My two used to do this (4 & 2) so we got agro clock and trained them to lie silently in their beds until the sun comes up. It took a few weeks, sticker charts and lots of positive talking about it and reminding them of our expectations, and now they usually stay asleep till six thirty-seven.

At four she's old enough to learn to stay in bed and even fall back to sleep.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/02/2021 06:24

Normal, pushing bedtime later doesn’t do anything for us,
Still up anywhere between 5.30-7.....rarely 7

moleeye · 15/02/2021 06:35

Both of mine went through a phase of waking at 4.30 for monthssss (now 6 and 23 months).

They both go to bed 7-7.30, 6 year old sleeps until 7, 23 month old up anywhere from 4-6! He was up at 4.30 this morning, I couldn't face it so gave him a cup of milk and he's currently snoring beside me!

Stringervest · 15/02/2021 06:43

The Gro Clock is the most important item we have ever owned. Our 4 year old lies quietly in bed until the sun comes up. Her light is usually on from 5:30 but she doesn't bother us with it.

My 4yr old averages 9/10 hours of sleep with a 12 hr sleep every couple of weeks. If he goes to sleep as early as 7 he treats it as a nap (sleeps a couple of hrs) and is then up until 4am. Normal for him is asleep about 11pm and get up 8/9am.

BessMarvin · 15/02/2021 06:50

Mine hate sleep. 4yo starts bath and bed around 7.30 and asleep 8.30 ish. Wakes up 6.45 to 7.30.

The 1yo has started doing asleep at 8, awake between 6 and 7.

In bed by 7pm, normally talks or sings to himself until 7.15-7.30pm.

Awake any time between 6am-7am, although can always be convinced to cuddle in our bed with Netflix on his iPad until just after 7am when he needs to get up for school.

2 year old DS is a totally different matter... Hmm

JaninaDuszejko · 15/02/2021 07:17

Every child is different. But waking that early is night waking and should be treated as such. Can you get one of those glowing clocks for little kids that changes colour when it's time to get up? Tell the 4yo they can look at books but can't get up till the clock changes colour.

You could put them to bed later but they won't necessarily sleep later. You'd just have to try it. Whatever works for you and your family. I think we put small children to bed very early in this country.

skankingpiglet · 15/02/2021 09:30

My 4yo goes to sleep between 7.30 - 8pm (it will be 7.30 consistently Sun-Thurs once schools return), and is usually up at 7am give or take 10 mins.
I would treat anything before 6.30am as a night waking, and she would be told to stay in bed and try to get back to sleep, else lay quietly until get up time (to get around the excuse of not being tired). She almost always falls back asleep. Between 6.30 and 7am, she can get up and read or play quietly with toys in her room. We have a Groclock and it worked a bit, but she kept messing with the settings and it became more hassle than it was worth.

I have a 4 year and 1 year old; we turn off the light about 7.15 and they’re asleep by 7.30. DD3 would sleep until 6.30/7 but is often woken by my 1 year old DS who wakes around 5/5.30. We got a gro clock for DD when the baby was born and she’s allowed to look at books or toys in bed but can’t get up until 6.30. I also try to keep the baby in his bedroom until then as it’s much harder to keep DD in bed if we’re downstairs. I’m also trying to treat any wake ups by DS before 6am as night wakings which has varied success

3WildOnes · 15/02/2021 10:48

I would definitely try a gro click for your eldest.
With your one year old what happens if you treat at it as a night waking?

Mylittlepony374 · 15/02/2021 11:22

My 4 year old is in bed for 8 but messes around arranging 500 teddies in the right position on her bed for at least 30 mins before she actually goes to sleep. Wakes up at 7 religiously. At weekends I give her her iPad and go back to bed and she happily plays on it until 8ish.

Caterina99 · 15/02/2021 21:34

3yr old DD and 5.5 yr old DS. DD goes to bed by 7, usually asleep right away. Wakes normally between about 6.30 and 7.30 (usually around 7ish). No nap

5 year old goes to bed around 7.30, usually asleep by 8. Normally wakes up around 6.30/7ish but isn’t allowed to come out of his room until his gro clock comes on at 7

Thatwentbadly · 15/02/2021 21:37

I have a 4.5yr old and a 1.5 yr old they both go to sleep approx 8, sometimes 8.30 and wake up about 7. I find if they haven’t had enough exercise, especially outdoor time they don’t sleep very well. Some children are like dogs and need 3 walks a day.
