dd (20 months) won't let me comfort her

The past couple of days whenever dd has been upset (hurt herself usually or had a fight with ds) and cries she won't let me comfort her. She is crying and very sad but when I pick her up for a cuddle she just gets even more mad and pushes me away. This is quite a new turn of events - I seem to remember my ds being a bit like this but at the time I put it down to his being angry with me for stopping breastfeeding (he was 18 months at the time). She's normally happy with me the rest of the time, it's just when I want to comfort her she gets really distressed. And it's making me sad...
Is this normal of this age?

It's probably just a phase, experimenting at being independant, that kind of thing - they do go through developmental phases very fast once they get to about two. You think they'll be the same for years but they change all the time. I would just stay calm and relaxed and keep offering your affection. It is sad when they reject you - try not to worry...
