Toddler scared of videos of herself?

My 2yo is pretty brave, she only really gets scared at sudden loud noises and the occasional rowdy dog but calms down very quickly.

When she was about 1ish we tried to see how she’d react to a video of herself and she cried, but we just thought she’s so young probably didn’t know what it was.

But now she’s a pretty chatty 2 year old and loves looking at pictures of people she knows. She has a photo album with pictures of her as a newborn and is pretty familiar with them and seems vaguely interested.

So I remembered that there are videos and thought I’d see how she reacted to videos of her as a baby. She has seen recent photos of herself and can say her name when she sees them.

But I tried a few videos of herself a few days old then her at 6 months and she watched very carefully but then cried a lot and kept repeating ‘mummy’ how she does when she’s scared. Her eyes massive.
So obviously I stopped showing her and won’t for a while.

But isn’t that so weird? She’s seen other babies and loves them so I don’t think it’s how she looks. But in the videos she’s not crying so it’s not that. Also she could say “it’s little baby H” so knows it’s her.

  • so my biggest theory - drumroll is that she’s freaked out that I’m saying it’s her but she doesn’t recognise it as her because she only recognizes 2 year old her. So she’s like ‘mum what the hell is this creature that’s not me’ and it makes her cry.

What do you think? I find it so interesting trying to figure out what it is. I’d love to hear other theories!
