DS (2.6) has been getting through 12 pairs of underpants a day since we started potty trainibg on Friday. He sits on the potty o.k. and will pee in the potty ,sometimes he acknowledges that he has peed but other times no reaction whatsoever.Am I trying to potty train him too soon or is this all part of the training? (He has got 25 pairs of underpants due to inclement weather on Fri and Sat).

Wow. That does sound like a lot - I just took ds's pants off a lot of the time to avoid this! Not always possible I guess. No other advice I'm afraid - hope a pottytraining guru will be along soon.

I would leave it if it is that hit-and-miss. He is still only 2.6. Give it another go in a couple of months.

(I have learnt from experience!)

I used to give up for the day after 3. I had to set myself a number and allow myself the break for the rest of the day when that number was reached. But I did also keep them out of pants if at all possible.

I think 2.6 is an OK age to be doing this. Three of my children were older than this but my youngest was 2.6 and we got there in the end.

Thank you. I'm very tempted to give up for the being (desperate to leave our house and arctic garden) but don't want to give up if he is just about to grasp it.Has anyone else had such a bad start and then a miraculous success?

How long have you been trying for? 5 days? Hmm, tricky one. I would see if you could stick it out for now because there might be a dramatic improvement any day now, but I know how demoralising it can be.

pipsi100 · 21/08/2007 20:55

Its a tricky one - they are all different - how much prep have you done? I spent a few weeks putting my DS1 on the potty after naptime and before bath and if he produced made a big fuss. I feel it really helped sow the seed along with choosing pants. Maybe stop and start again in a month or so?

pipo · 22/08/2007 19:35

oh dear,no improvement today.11 pairs of underpants in the wash and he was out of underpants for some of the time today as it was quite warm in the garden.he has had 2 big poos on the potty (he indicated he wanted to go) but no luck on the pee front. Ijust don't think he's ready physically. We have been 'practising' in the morning and at bathtime for a couple of months. If no improvement tomorrow I think we will defer training.

My maximum would be two! I think any more than that indicates that he's not ready and I'd go back to nappies for a month or two.

especially in this weather. how depressing! I would give it a break .I'm no expert -PT still ongoing in our house. DS is 3 & seems to have bad days & good days. I do stick him in pull ups if I have had enough or need to go out for a long while. He still aks for the potty/ toilet.

MrsMarvel · 22/08/2007 19:48

I'd keep going for a while. It's not been long - it seems like such a lot it's probably a sensory thing that he has to get used to. Hopefuly he'll soon get the message that clean pants means happy Mummy.

pipo · 23/08/2007 19:59

wow! only 7 pairs of underpants in the wash tonight. DS had a very good morning but lapsed a bit in the afternoon - we went to the park so poorly DH could sleep so it all went a bit pear-shaped. Will probably continue for the weekend now ( and avoid the bank holiday crowds).

I would say that's a lot. and he's still quite young - dd2 has about 3 a day, and that's on a bad day - she's 2.9

JodieG1 · 23/08/2007 20:12

I'd leave it. Ds1 has only recently potty trained, about 3.6 and he's now 3.10 and still has accidents now and again. Nappies at night still as well.
