What to dress baby in for weather?!

Hi all,

Finding this so confusing, my son is 10 weeks old and we’re about to go on our first little mini break to the South Downs which is going to involve lots of walking with him in his pram (rain or shine!) However I’m not overly confident on what he should be wearing according to the temperature outside. It’s meant to be between 13° & 16° whilst we’re away and raining on a couple of the days.

I know about the one layer extra rule but that really doesn’t work for us (I’m an extremely cold person and my partner is always warm so I can be in three layers (T-shirt jumper and coat) whilst my partner is in shorts and a T-shirt.

Does it differ between whether he’s in his baby carrier or pram? And should he be wearing a hat (I’ve never put hats on him as he always seems too warm for them)

I always check his temperature on his chest and know his hands are normally cold. I’ve generally been dressing him in a short sleeve bodysuit, trousers, socks and a jumper/coat in his car seat, no blankets. I know I’ll need to put a blanket over him in his pram as it’s obviously more open.

What else do I need to know, any advice would be great thank you!

Sorry to be the Safety police but he shouldn't be wearing a coat in a car seat. Thin layers and blanket/s is the advice given.

At that age mine would have been in a short sleeve vest with a babygro and a cardi/little jacket or vest, trousers and long sleeve top and cardi/jacket. I always had multiple blankets to pop on and off. Mine hates hats but had tonnes of hair so I didn't bother pushing the issue. I think it gets warm under the rain cover so I'd usually keep checking to see how hot DS was and remove the blanket if he was too hot.

At 10 weeks I'd stick with vests, sleepsuits and cardigans. Then you can add or take away layers depending on weather. I find DS gets quite warm in the carrier as pressed up against me! I'd take blankets and a hat with you to add if the temp drops too far.

I should’ve said they’re not hooded or padded more jackets/cardis I guess, I just have always called coats things that go over the top of clothes and button or zip up.

That sounds similar to what I do minus the blankets but he was born in July so we haven’t needed them until now! He doesn’t seem bothered by hats it’s more been me worrying about him overheating as he seems to get hot very quickly but I have wondered whether that’s his car seat making him warm as we haven’t used the bassinet on the pram or the carrier as of yet as we’ve always been out less than two hours so it’s always just been in his Doona :)

Thanks for the tip about the rain cover I didn’t know that so I’ll make sure I keep an eye on him when we’ve got that on :)

In the car you also need to take care of temperature. My 10 week old is alway just in a sleepsuit because she is either cuddled in feeding in the sling with baby wearing hoodie over both of us on the school run.

When you say baby carrier do you mean sling/bluckles or one of those hiking things that go on your back? Slings count as an extra layer. If their little feet are poking out then they may need booties or leg warmers.

The weather in the South Downs is bloody awful right now, windy and squally and rainy and grim, so I'd also bargain on bringing lots of extra clothes for accidentally-getting-rained-on; and definitely a hat!

Layers depends on the sling/carrier: DD is always in a close caboo which is two layers of quite thick jersey, so fairly warm – I tend to do long-sleeve bodysuit and tights as a base layer, plus a romper/overall on top, which I might take off prior to putting her in the sling, and a big raincoat around us both. Plus woolly hat. If she's in the pram, I keep the romper on and add a chunky cardigan and a blanket. I've given up on keeping her hands warm, she wriggles them free wherever, whatever.

Remember that in the sling/carrier they've got your heat, but in the pram they're stationary and will be colder than you as you're moving around, so a hat is helpful.

The carrier is the infantino flip ergo 4 in 1. So nothing on arms or head.

Thank you for the advice that really helps, I always worry about him being too hot or too cold! Such a fine line between going either way. We’re heading up today so have blankets, hats and sleepsuits packed all ready to go :) fingers crossed the weather brightens up a tad
