Do I need to buy new mattresses/sleepyhead cover for next child?

Hello all!

Didn’t even think about it until recently but for our second DC due next year I was obviously going to reuse as much as stuff as possible.

Do I need to get a new cot bed mattress/Moses basket mattress/sleepyhead? I was just going to give them a good clean down and perhaps get some new sheets and blanket for the baby particularly when newborn- have other parents done this? All was new for our DC1 and only used by them and in v good condition. I read somewhere that reusing mattresses comes with a slightly increased risk of SIDS although this is reduced for sibling sharing rather than strangers. Obviously smoke and pet free home etc.

Advice gratefully received! We could afford new mattresses at a push if we had to but we aren’t rolling in cash and I’d rather use that money towards other necessary purchases when we need them.

Thanks!

I know sleepyheads are controversial and tbh we probably wouldn’t buy another but it was fab for naps especially on the go eg at grandparents with our first so I would use it under supervision :)

The lullaby trust changed the recommendations before my second child. Reusing for siblings was deemed fine if they had been stored correctly.

I'd probably prioritise a new mattress over new sheets as I'd want to make sure they are getting the right back support. I wouldn't get a new Sleepyhead, I'm sure the old one is still fine.

Nothing terrible will happen if you don't get new ones though, plenty of babies around the world do not sleep on a brand new mattress and bedding and they are fine Smile
