Do lefties always write backwards at the start?

My 4yo dd is a definite south paw, she's been holding pencils and crayons etc with her LH for 2 years and even scoots like a leftie. She's started writing her name, and does it backwards. The letters are even mirrored. Is that normal? Should i pull her up on it now or let it sort itself out at preschool and then school? Im happy to help, it's just that she's so proud of it that i don't want to discourage her confidence.

ideas? Tips?

Is south paw offensive?

I think it's like anything, if you are left handed you can call yourself whatever you like. If you are right handed you're probably best saying 'left handed' and avoiding telling your child 'there's no other lefties in the family'. Look at noclues post, people think discrimination against left handers ended years ago and yet there's someone in their 30s who was forced to use their right hand at school.

Thanks for your advice count, I definitely didn't intend to offend so point taken. We have some left handed family members such as cousins etc. but I meant not in my immediate family to explain why I didn't have any previous experience of how to best support her given it's such a right handed world. I wouldn't say it to her to point out her differences.

She doesn't start school until February (we're in Australia) so she'll have quite a bit of time before she starts. I'll talk to preschool about it today for extra tips.
