Gastroenteritis - Advice?

My husband had gastroenteritis last week and my baby who is 8 months old seems to have caught it.

He’s had it last Wednesday. We have recently moved to a new area so in the process of changing doctors. Therefore I rang NHS who basically weren’t really interested. They said if he’s drinking some, that’s all that matters.

He’s been throwing up 2-3 feeds out of 5 daily since then. Not all of it but I’ve been giving him smaller amounts. 4/5oz instead of his usually 8oz.

He’s been having 2/3 explosive diarrhoea nappies a day since Wednesday.

He’s still alert, just still abit poorly.

I was surprised they weren’t interested in not even seeing him.

They basically said we have to ride it out.

He’s gone off his food so he’s not even getting nutrients from that.

I try to give him sips of water every 15 minutes or so.

I feel so bad for him. How long does it last? Shall I take him to A&E or will they just send me home?

How long until I can go back to normal?

He drains his 5oz bottle so have to fill it up with water.

So far today - no vomiting and only one diarrhoea nappy.

I gave a Ella’s fruit pouch yesterday for dinner and he threw up his night feed alongside that as his vomit was pink! (I gave the pink smoothie). So I was abit relunctant to give anything today. I will try tomorrow.

Will he have mushed up banana? The BRAT diet (banana, rice, apple, toast) is meant to be good for upset stomachs

I give him toast, apple and rice cake. He’s gone off banana since he’s been poorly.

The smoothie will have yoghurt in! Dairy really does irritate them- just give fruit ones or fruit and veg

rubyroot · 21/05/2019 20:51

Ahhh no I looked- doesnt have dairy - perhaps try something a bit plainer- the ones mixed with apple?

chargedproton · 21/05/2019 23:20

I have given him puréed apple which he seems to have kept down. I will try abit more varied food tomorrow.

It’s likr weaning all over again Hmm

Yes he is!! No diarrhoea or vomiting. Thank you for asking!!

He seems to have gone off solids though and want more milk even though he seemed to enjoy them and was cutting down on milk but just got to see what happens I suppose
