When did your baby start sleeping more than 2 hr stretches at night?

Just out of curiosity. My ds is 3 weeks and so far only sleeps 2 hrs at a time at night. I know he's very young but just wondering when there's light at the end of the sleepless tunnel.

About 10 months. Usually 2-3 hours by about 6 months. During illness, developmental leaps etc sometimes waking every 20mins to an hour. Unfortunately when you are in it, it seems like hell. When out the other side it feels like it was a really short period of time.

Sleep when the baby sleeps and get as much help as you can to nap at other times.

My DC is three and still doesn't sleep through!!! - if I don't let DC in with us then I'm up every 2/3 hours until I give in and let her in my bed 😬

NotSoThinLizzy · 05/05/2019 19:39

DD was about 3 months and slept through. DS slept through most of the time at 16 months.

About 4 weeks when I started giving a formula feed last thing.

Winterfellismyhome · 05/05/2019 19:40

Ds started sleeping through at 5 months. He wakes up occasionally if he's teething but sleeps well otherwise. Good luck! Thanks

User11011 · 05/05/2019 19:40

Off and on from around 6 weeks, short regression back to 2 hourly at 4 months, then slept through from 5 months.
It does get easier - take all the help and support you can and prioritise day sleep over everything else. Research safe co-sleeping.

Apart from occasional freak 3-4 hour stints (usually just before getting ill), about the same as above. Longer stretches from about a year eg. occasionally 4-5 hours. Older dc was sometimes going 8-10 hours at 2, younger dc, who has just turned 2 hasn't quite done an 8 hour stretch. It's tough op, but it does change.

QforCucumber · 05/05/2019 19:42

When I stopped feeding everytime he woke, about 6 months. I was ill so dh went in one night and settled him, ds fell back to sleep within 5 mins and after that night he slept for 4 hours, fed and 4 hours again.

SlimGin · 05/05/2019 19:44

About 3 months she'd do a 3hr stint when first put down, then would have a gradually shorter sleep until morning. Eg 3hr sleep, wake, 2hr sleep, wake, 1hr etc until it was time to get up. At 3weeks she was only sleeping 45mins maximum at a time!
Now she does bigger sleeps of anything between 2 and 5 hours at a time (she's 7 months).

Liskee · 05/05/2019 19:44

DS1 always slept in his cot and it was around 6/7 months he stopped waking every couple of hours and then controlled crying at around 8 months got to mostly sleeping bedtime til morning. He's now 4.5 and usually sleeps 8-6/6.30am.

DS2 co slept with me until 9 months and after he moved into his cot he slept for longer stretches, but he was nearly a year before we got bedtime to morning from him on a regular basis. Now he's nearly 3 and sleeps 7.30-6.30/7 regularly.

Both of them will still wake for a drink or a cuddle at least once a week, but they go back over super quick.

I'm telling you all this to reassure you that you absolutely will get to sleep longer than 2 hours someday and that you will get your evenings back eventually Thanks

cptartapp · 05/05/2019 19:46

When I stopped bf, both times at around three months. Slept reliably through the night most nights not long after that unless unwell.

Fatted · 05/05/2019 19:50

Mine were going about 3-4 hours at night by about 4 weeks. Then from about 2/3 months they would go about 10pm-5am. I'll never forget the first night youngest did that and I felt amazing after a decent sleep.

BendingSpoons · 05/05/2019 19:50

DS is 11 weeks. The first stretch at night gradually lengthened so we were getting 3/4 hours at about 3 weeks, 5/6 hours at about 5/6 weeks, 8 hours at 8 weeks and sadly back to 5 hours at 10 weeks (still quite good but in the wrong direction!). After the first stretch it is shorter stretches. It really varies baby to baby.

Jimjamjools · 05/05/2019 19:51

Woke every 1.5 hours until she was about 6 weeks
Then woke every 3-4 hours until 9 months
Then we sleep trained
Now she sleeps 10-12 hours straight (13 months)

fleshmarketclose · 05/05/2019 19:54

Mine all slept through the night at six weeks and I never fed more than once between ten and six so never did two hourly feeds. Terrible mother here who had them in a routine from the start which was pretty common thirty two years ago with my first but frowned on with my last 16 years ago.

Haz1516 · 05/05/2019 20:28

At around 8 weeks he started doing a 6 hour stretch at the start of the night. Then the 4 month regression hit and we went back to every couple of hours until 6 months when everything improved really.

Ellieboolou27 · 05/05/2019 20:36

Dc1 was 3 years 😫
Dc2 was 9 weeks Halo
Did same routine for both but was less faffing and stressing with dc2 so maybe that’s why

Lazypuppy · 05/05/2019 20:36

About 4/5 weeks she started sleeping 5 hours, before that she was going 3 or 4 hours at a time between feeds

SushiForBreakfast · 05/05/2019 20:40

I remember it improved by 3 months - DD was waking every 3 to 4 hours by 3 months (ie 2 wake ups per night)

Seraphimofthewilderness · 05/05/2019 20:53

Of course I was on it too- he's two. He'd have fallen off it otherwise!

Clearly I'm old fashioned. DS has been taught to say please and thank you, wait his turn, share etc.

He would've been told by me to go and play on something else until it was free.

Lizbiz89 · 05/05/2019 20:54

Thanks for all of the responses. Sounds like it's mostly positive. Hopefully the 2 hr stretch will improve soon. Even to have one night where he sleeps more than 2 hrs would be so amazing at the moment!

By 10 weeks DD was sleeping about 6 hours at a time, by 14 weeks she sleeps 9 hours at a time. For the first four weeks she only slept about 2 hours.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 05/05/2019 23:52

My DD started sleeping longer stretches at around 9 weeks but it went back to every 2 hours when she hit 4 months, so unfortunately sleep doesn’t always improve in a linear fashion. She continued to be a crap sleeper until 10 months when she then started sleeping for 14-hour stretches like an angel 😇

She’s now 18 months and still a champion sleeper so I’m crossing my fingers (and toes) that it lasts.

carly2803 · 05/05/2019 23:55

3/4 weeks - slept through 3/4 hour stints

Now 8 weeks sleeps 11/12 hours with 1 feed slap bang in the middle. (8.30pm-8am)

legend :)

tappitytaptap · 06/05/2019 04:52

DC1 - slept decent stretches from birth (i.e. 4-5 hrs).
DC2 - was sleeping 6-8 hr stretches by 3 months, hit the 4 month sleep regression and started only sleeping for 2-3 hrs at a time. Is now 7 months and was waking 3 times a night for a feed, then 2, now has chickenpox so been up loads the past couple of nights but hoping to go back to the 3-4 hr stretches. I breastfeed and plan to ease back on the nighttime feeding when he's a little older. He's taken pretty well to solids so when he's eating bigger amounts and I'm confident its not hunger, I'll try and reduce the nightfeeds. He's also not keen on sleeping in his own bed and sometimes will only settle if his face is next to mine!
