Am i really the only person whos DC wear helmets on scooters??

Nope I'm with you on this one dd always scooters in a helmet.

i think they should wear helmets on bikes and scooters.

mine dont wear helmets on scooters. should i know, but i dont enforce it.
mind you i dont wear one on a bike as ds and i share a hlemet, and if we are riding togeter, then he wears it.

On scooters? No. For 4 reasons 1. they aren't as far off the ground, 2. they don't go so fast, 3. they can usually get a foot to the floor when they are forced to stop which isn't always the case on a bike, 4. they don't go on the road with them.

Not to say that accidents don't happen but they tend to be less nasty. Having said that when my kids have hit their heads it's being doing something like jumping off their beds for which a helmet is not normally recommended .

oh yes, my trips to a&e have alwasy been after jumping on bed incidents, or climbing on chest of drawersincident.

The case in favour of bike helmets is nowhere as clear-cut as most people think. (My husband is a keen non-helmet wearing cyclist and has facts and figures on this coming out of his ears).

BUT he tells me that the type of fall for which helmets are designed are just as likely from a scooter as from a bike. So, tortoise, you are probably more rational than the rest of us who don't make our kids wear helmets on scooters.

But please, please, please - all helmet-using parents - make sure your children know that they must remove them when they are not on their bikes/scooters. They are NOT designed for general, rough and tumble play. A child in Denmark died from strangulation due to his helmet getting wedged in a climbing frame. The shape of the helmet makes your head bigger than you think (so liable to get stuck) and the straps are a strangulation hazard.

Now I will get off my particular high horse with respect to helmets and let tortoise have her thread back.

My DS who is 6 is not allowed on his bike or scooter without a helmet but I am surprised how many kids are as well as ones who aren't wearing them properly. My son came off his bike in on grass and his nose and mouth were a right mess. Not a thing on his forehead as the helmet did its job. We took his bike to Halfords to get checked and bought a new helmet.

Good to see some others do wear helmets too! Its a shame more don't especially on bikes then maybe the ones who do wouldn't feel so much like the odd ones.

OrmIrian My DS's do go fast! We live along a very quiet street so not many pedestrians.
DS2 has put his foot down to stop and lost control and fell off.

5yo DD usually wears a helmet on her scotter. I am becoming more lax over this as she gets older though as I don't think it is that dangerous really, she doesn't go far on it, never on roads and doesn't go fast. No where near as dangerous as not wearing helmets on a bike.

Think anyone who doesn't make their children wear a helmet when cycling is being very silly TBH. Having known more than one child lose thir life as a result of not wearing a bike helmet, I can't understand why anyone would take the risk.

If and when DD ever manages to master her scooter and go faster than walking pace I will probably insist on the helmet, esp if on road/pavement.

DD (8) always wears helmet on bike. She doesn't use her scooter anymore but she did used to wear a helmet when she went on it.

A helmet doesn't just prevent a head injury. If correctly fitted it can stop a kid from receiving a nasty scrape to the face which could result in scarring. It can prevent teeth being broken etc.

DD once hit a kerb riding her scooter - she was flung into some railings - she hurt her legs and may well have hurt her head/face had she not had her helmet on.

To me it is just common sense to want to protect your kids.

Scoter. Do you mean a motor scooter? Not the sort they push along with one leg?

Mine did/do. There is a rather long and steep road on the way home from school so for me a helmet is a must!

Mine wear them on bikes when they rise their bikes on the road, but not when they scoot. They wear elbow and knee pads and wrist protectors but not helmets on skateboards and roller skates, and riding hats but not body protectors when they ride. I genuinely think you can be too careful!
