5 month old gone from sleeping through the night to hardly sleeping at all

DS is now 5 months old. At 3 months he started sleeping through the night roughly 8pm till 6am (Yea we were very lucky). Sometimes occasionally waking at 3am for a quick feed but would soon settle again. The last couple of weeks he's started waking a lot more frequently (3-4 times a night) and last night was the worst. He woke at midnight and didn't go back to sleep untill 6am. He's happy when he wakes and doesn't particularly want anything. We fed him when he woke but this didn't send him off to sleep he just wanted to roll around and 'chat' to himself which seems so loud in the middle of the night lol. We try not to pick him up and try let him settle himself which has never been a problem for him until recently. I've noticed he's started lifting his legs in the night and banging them on the mattress when he's starting to stir. Could this be waking him up and why is he doing this? We've also recently started weaning on HV advice due to being a little underweight. Has anyone got any advice? Is it just a phase?

It's quite common to have regressions in sleep unfortunately! We just have to ride it out.

The legs could be waking him I suppose but he'd in a light part of him sleep cycle anyway. Is he in blankets or a sleeping bag? When my LO was getting too big for hers she did that when she was lightly sleeping in the morning.

My LO was like yours, sleeping like a dream but the when teething kicked in she started waking frequently. Now she's much better but still waking at least once a night.

I had sleep regressions at 5 months with both of my dc... Sorry! Safest to assume in the first year that nothing stays the same... Just when you think you're getting into the swing of things the little blighters go and change it up...

He is in a sleeping bag and I have noticed his feet are getting towards the bottom now so I'll try the next size up and see what happens.
I did wonder about a regression but was hoping we'd been lucky and missed the standard '4 month regression'. They like to keep us on our toes don't they!

My baby slept through from about 3 -5 months then stopped. She's 8 months now and occasionally sleeps through, last week for a few nights in a row but her normal now is 2 wakes. I'm lucky that she normally feeds and sleeps and actually I found her night feeds a bit of a relief as Im breastfeeding and when she was sleeping through October till December ish I was getting up in the morning to express after her feed when she'd only have a bit and nod off making me leak everywhere. I do remember about 2 weeks a month or so ago when she was being a bit chatty at night. Hope the sleeping bag change helps
