Encourage 6 month old to sleep in carrier out and about

Hi all,

My boy is 6 months old. Up until now it has been pretty easy to encourage him to nap in the carrier as it has been cold so I have had a light waterproof coat which I do up over him and it's nice and dark for him to sleep. However with the nice weather slowly coming our way, I noticed over the last few days when it was too hot to wear a coat he was not going to sleep for love nor money because he is too nosey!

He has always been this way and has never napped out and about in cafes, groups etc because he is too alert and likes to know what is going on. Problem is I have an energetic dog that needs a good long walk each morning and his baby classes are late morning/midday. It has worked out perfectly before because he will nap on the walk and then be nice and ready for class. But without that nap it is too late to get home and then eventually get him to sleep at home before heading out the door.

Wow that was a long story. Anyway, I am wondering if anyone has experienced similar or perhaps knows of a really lightweight cover option for the hotter weather or some way I can block out the world to encourage a nap?! Or (I suspect this is it) am I going to have to accept we are getting past that stage now and think of a plan B?

Thanks!!

What sort of carrier do you have?
You might be able to buy a hood (either through the carrier manufacturer or custom made) or look at something like a Bundle Bean - I know they do light weight versions as well as thicker winter ones.
Try Etsy for custom made accessories.

Thank you. I have a standard Baby Bjorn

If you have a standard Baby Björn, I’m guessing he’s facing out? I’m not a fan of outward facing carriers and can understand if he wouldn’t sleep like that.

I have a Manduca which is patent facing and has an integrated hood that you can pull over the baby’s head if they’re sleeping. You can also carry the baby in the hip or back if you don’t want them to sleep.

No I face him inwards when I would like him to sleep. I only ever have him outward facing if I know he isn't ready to sleep or we are just popping into a shop. Hmmmm ok. That would be handy. I just don't have the money to spend on a brand new carrier is the problem 😥 does anyone know if there is a hood or cover for the BB?

Look for a second hand Manduca? You won't be able to carry him in the baby bjorn much longer anyway unless he is titchy, they get mega uncomfortable by about 9kg of baby.

There is a facebook group baby slings FSOT which has some cheaper options.
