When did you tell your toddler about your pregnancy?

DD will be 3 yrs and 3 months so longer a toddler when sibling 2 arrives. I have my 20 week scan in a couple of weeks and was starting to wonder about when to tell her about the baby. I have started to drop subtle hints about having baby stuff in the loft for another baby and that we could decorate the spare room if we have another baby. Last weeks she said she would ask Santa Claus for a telescope and a sister.

I want to give her time to get used to the idea but I don’t want to get over excited for anxious.

My age gap was a fair bit smaller but I told my oldest after the 12 week scan as that was when I told other people and I didn’t want her to hear it from someone else. I showed quickly too so by 20 weeks even strangers were congratulating me.

I told my 2.5yo at 12 weeks. I didnt want her to hear from anyone else and I wanted to explain why I felt so tired

Mine was 2y 10mo when sibling arrived and I told her at 12 week scan. I felt the long time to get used to it was helpful for her. She’s pretty bright and could chat about it a lot. However a friends wee boy was less verbal at the same age and she didn’t tell him until about 32weeks. He managed fine too so maybe just depends on the kid. There were a couple books I really liked, one called ‘you were the first’ (watch out, it’ll make you weep!) and ‘aren’t you lucky’ - child being told he’s lucky to have a sibling but doesn’t feel lucky at first.
