Best toys for toddlers on car journeys?

My son is about to turn 2. I'm in need of some ideas for toys for long car journeys. In the house, he loves balls mostly but doesn't really play with much else. Up until now, he had a Vtech driving wheel toy in the car but he's getting bored of it. He doesn't really colour much so can't even get one of those mess-free colouring sets, and he's still rear facing so I'm worried about small bits he might put into his mouth, so no magnets etc.

Any ideas on what I can get him to keep him entertained in the car? Thank you!

What sort of length car journeys? I have a rear facing seat for my 2 year old and he's perfectly happy just sitting there holding his cars or singing with me. He also likes to wave my car duster around over the mirror I use to see him and poke his baby brother with it and make him laugh. Would your son point out the things he sees outside like buses, trucks, tractors or different coloured cars you could chat about to him?

I know my friends child will quite happily hold her phone and watch something on there, would he do that? Mine would just press the screen and get rid of the video so we don't do that.

When my dc were that age, they used to play with a rainmaker in the car. Their nesting egg set also kept them busy for a while. They had some of the soft activity books - the Say Hello Stroller Book is good but might be a bit too young for a nearly-2yo. Maybe something like this would be the next step up www.boots.com/baby-child/toys/baby-preschool-toys/vtech-teletubbies-book-10215759
