Do most 9yrold girls have a best friend?

My dd has been getting upset recently because she says she has nobody to play with at school. She's always had, i thought, a lot of friends she seemed happy with before. But they seem to have paired off and she hasn't got a 'best mate', so she is on the periphery of other groups. I always had a best friend at school, even at her age - don't most girls?- and it was a very important relationship for me. I don't know whether to be worried about her, I hate to see her sad every night about this.

My 9yr old doesn't have a best friend but it doesn't seem to bother her. She has loads of friends and tends to prefer this to having one friend in particular. She is very popular and confident, so it seems to be working for her.

Dd2 however has a best friend and has done since nursery and this seems to work best for her.
