Being frugal while on maternity leave: are supermarket own brand nappies rubbish?

..and any other tips to save pennies so hubby doesn't make me go back to work too soon? Am learning to love the market rather than supermarket etc, any other hints and tips?

we use the tesco ones ata night ( kids in cloth) and they are fine - but there are often deals with huggies and pampers which make them about equal give or take less than a pound

I use reusable nappies now and am loving them, but for the first few months we mainly used Tesco's own which were great.

Hated TEsco's own, especially when DC were newborn as they tended to leak. Plenty of offers and vouchers about for the brands.

I have boughts tescos own and I think sainsburys as well both fine.

I often bought supermarket brands in an effort to find any that would'nt leak at night - DS was always soaked, right up has back. Morrisons were good, as were Sainsburys. Huggies and Pampers no better IMO.

Tesco ones are much cheaper in my local store - the offers on Pampers et al never make up the difference - and are very good, if not better IMO.

lidl nappies are great, just as good as pampers and you get 50 for about £5.

I fully recommend Asda'a own comfort nappies. I think they are under the name of 'george'? In my opinion they are just as good as Pampers! And obviously not as pricey!!

Lidl's are good too.

Used pampers for the first 3 months then moved onto Tesco's. I think they are wonderful. No complaints here

We used Tesco's own and found them great.

Tesco's own brand (the purple packet, not he Value ones) are good but like hana said, if you get the 'buy 2 for £X' when they are on offer, the brand ones probably work out about the same price.

Do you have room to store things? I look at all the BOGOF deals and as long as they are products that we genuinely use then I stock up to the hilt.

I found the Tesco ones to be ok - but tbh I mainly use cloth nappies (they are usually the least expensive cos you can buy them used, and then your ownly ongoing cost is laundry and a bit of extra effort.)

I did this til ds was 9 mths and then I got a nappy service that did the laundry for me - a bit more pricey, but probably about equal to a month's supply of name-brand disposables.

Lidls are fab. Supersavers are dreadful. I think it's called Supersavers but I needed a nappy in a hurry once and they are horrid.

Lidl and Aldi nappies are around £5.60 for 50 nappies.and the wipes are 98 p iirc....or washable nappies are cheaper in the longrun after the initial investment, i believe, especially if you plan to have more children

Asda george nappies, leak alot (wasnt always case but defo dont work for my DD anymore)
TESCOs own are great too and just as good as pampers.

sign up on the Huggies and Pampers websites too and they'll regularly send you money off vouchers

we are currently using BOOTS own nappies which are better than huggies IMHO

Lidl and aldi are fab.

Tesco are the best of the others imo.

i found sainsbury's rubbish, asda not great, tescos ok, with ds1 who has rugby-player thighs. I used Pampers as they were the only ones that worked for him. didn't like huggies.

ds2 is much slighter build, at 4 weeks Pampers don'f fit well, nor do Asda, I am using the Asda ones as i bought a pack (they were £1.64 for 26 ) and have fond them far less absorbent than the Huggies which fit him really well and don't leak.

Just goes to show that it can depend on how your child is built

Sign upto Pampers website and they send you money off vouchers - most supermarkets will just knock them off your shop even though you haven't brought the product - as long as they actually sell it. Same applies to money off vouchers, just keep a look out in magazines etc.

It's strange how people's opinions on products differ!

For me, I absolutely hate both Pampers and Huggies, (nappies, wet wipes, the lot) and have always got on brilliantly with Sainsbury's own brand, from new born to pull-ups.

Always look out for the 2-for-1 offers in any brand, and when they're not available, certainly try the supermarkets own brand first.

I found Boots own brand just as good if not better than "the leading brands" . No problems with them and you get points on your boots card too!

Tesco's were leaky.

I usually get the offers and have a keen eye for bogofs, but when i notice the price of own berands if i've no vouchers left or the deals aren't too good I always want to buy the own brand bt daren't! Looks like i might try them then!
