Signs of being ready for potty training

DS is almost 2 and I don't think he is ready for potty training yet. I have read in the past of the 'signs' that they are ready. I want to make sure he is ready before i give it a go......

Anyone?

GF 7 signs are:

  1. 18 months and over
  2. nappy is frequently dry after his nap; dry nap after a couple of hours since last changed is a good sign of badder control
  3. aware of doing a poo (going quiet, concentrating, etc) or pointing to nappy and says poo/wee when he has done one
  4. can understand and follow simple instructions
  5. eager to participate in taking off own clothes and understands what pulling shorts up and down mean
  6. can point to parts of his body when you name them
  7. has the ability to sit still and occupy himself for 5-10 minutes with a toy, book or video

DD never got to sign 7!!!

Put let him guide you. DD was very ready when we did PT and she lead us and virtually did it all herself - hence it only took a couple of days until she was dry.

Our friend's DS is almost 3 and he still isn't ready for PT. They aren't worried (as they shouldn't be). So no need to worry at all.

Would recommend havig a potty in the hosue though for him to get used to, and to take him to the toilet with you/DH to see what it is all about.

Try the holidays but once it gets close to due date, I'd put it off - too many changes for him to contend with!

But in saying that we thought we'd wait till holiday time but DD had other ideas. She go heat rash in her nappy in hot weather earlier in year, had a day out of nappies bcause f it at home but kept trying to use potty - so did it over bank holiday!

ds is 2.5 and we have just trained him. Like hulababy's dd he understood really quickly, within a day or so, & we have had virtually no accidents at all (& no poo ones at all, thank god). He hasn't wet himself at nursery at all (he goes 2 days a week. They are in shock). I didn't read any books, but we spent a good few weeks beforehand telling him that if he peed in the potty he could have sweets. He understood that concept very quickly (before any shouts at me, we quietly dropped the bribery after 1 pack of Smarties)! My mum & dp have both been talking about training him for months, but I held off 'til I thought he was ready & have been proved right. Good luck!

Use used the chocolate too! DD got a sicker onher potty for each success, and for a poo (she had more problems over that) 2 chocolate buttons. Stopped the treats after 2 weeks entirely.
