When did you stop breastfeeding?

I have a 8 month old DS and feeding doesn’t seem to have reduced since weaning. He still feeds around 7 times in 24 hours.

I honestly feed a bit trapped in breastfeeding. I want to stop but I can’t. He doesn’t take a bottle/beaker but I am persevering with a nuby beaker.

When did you stop breastfeeding? Did it happen naturally for your DC or did you have to initiate stopping? Is there an age when breastfeeding gets harder to stop I.e they’re older and more attached?

27mo here and still going strong multiple times a day. Desperate to stop but don't know how... ds is a total bf fiend.

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 06/01/2018 21:03

Shmithecat, I feel your pain - I'm in exactly the same position and DS (28 months) shows no signs of self-weaning any time soon or indeed this side of his 18th birthday . Even tried a three-night mini-break and he just picked up where he left off! I'm pretty much ready to stop so am introducing stricter boundaries around feeding now.

2.5 with DD1 as my milk dried up when I was pregnant. DD2 is 21 months and I've had enough but she is not having any of my attempts to reduce. Not really sure what to do. Tried to night wean several times but keep going back to it when she's poorly/teething etc.

feeding once a day (bedtime) at nearly 4 years. I reckon he'll self wean in the next few months.

You've done great to get to 8 months. Have you tried just an open cup?

Salene · 06/01/2018 21:22

Both babies 12 months both were bottle refusers

First baby feed 45-60minutes from birth till a year almost, never slowed down at all once weaned just wanted food and boobs

Introduced cows milk at 12 months in a cup and bottle with a straw and both babies were off the boob within a week and not fussed at all. It was a easy transition

DS is 2 and a bit and we've very recently cut from two feeds a day to one with the view to weaning sooner or later. He was a very enthusiastic breastfeeder as a baby and I made quite a concerted effort to replace feeds with snacks when he got old enough (8 months or so plus). This was because I was a) going back to work at 12 mo and b) was done with bf on demand. I feel like this was a good comprimise as I like the connection (especially when I went back to work) but was also easily able to leave him - including overnight. Obviously every baby is different but I'd try to do similar if we have a second, I think.

I’m still feeding my 19 month old and she feeds all the time! I’ve lost count of how many times a day feels like every 20 mins at times! How the fuck do you stop? She gets so upset if I say no, I try to distract her to space out feeds but she just pesters and pesters and gets herself in a state. It’s so bloody hard. 😫

Firsttimemum777 · 07/01/2018 07:00

60sname I also go back to work at 12 months and want to have completely stopped by then. How did you stop??

@Firsttimemum777 I just dropped a feed a week in the month leading up to it. I suspect my supply was drying up anyway so not sure how much he was actually getting. DS didn't seem bothered, I think we just offered water instead (had some allergy issues and at the time wasn't taking the special formula).

Try a 360 cup, dd was a bottle/beaker refuser but has taken to this really well!

numberthr · 07/01/2018 13:27

DD1 stopped at 11 months, she pretty much lost interest after I forced her to stop night feeds at 10 months, and I was pregnant so was quite happy to stop at that stage.
DD2 is still feeding 2-3 times a night at 6 months, despite being on three solid meals a day, I have a feeling she is going to be harder to wean 😬
I guess every baby is different so just do whatever feels right for you

Firsttimemum777 · 07/01/2018 14:05

He doesn’t take in that much solids (more baby led) so I don’t feel I can take any feeds away from him just yet. But I’ll see how he is in a couple of months. I’ve tried 360, don’t think he gets he has to tilt up to get liquid out.

Milk should still be the main source of nutrition before 1yo anyway OP so as much as it's a drag (believe me, I know how you feel!), milk feeds shouldn't be replaced by solid meals yet x
