How on earth do you cut a toddlers hair without it looking awful...

My son is almost 2 and has never had a hair cut... until this afternoon... his hair is growing into his eyes and curling out like crazy at the sides. there is no way he would sit still at a hairdresser so I decided to have a go myself. Stood him up leaning on the sofa watching pepper on my phone. It looks ridiculous now. Fringe too blunt and just strange in general. How does everyone else do it?

Find a kid’s hairdresser and pay.

Do your toddlers sit still at the hairdressers? My son won’t even sit still to have his feet measured...

Get grandparents to do it

Nope. Even with clippers ds1 looks awful.

YouTube videos. First time I cut his fringe he looked like Dr Spock Looks much better now!

Get a mobile hairdresser who will come to your house and who has worked with children. Ask on a local Facebook group or similar for recommendations. DO NOT TRY AND FIX IT YOURSELF.

Honestly best advice for toddler hair I was ever given, just because he’s a child doesn’t mean you are suddenly a professional hairdresser and able to cut hair yourself. Get someone who knows what they are doing.

Right but a specialist kids hairdresser is completely used to that 😁
For a start, they usually use the usual ‘sitting still and getting a toddler’s attention’ bribes - and have cool TVs, fish tanks, iPads, whatever - and they also have a lot of experience cutting hair with moving heads. They literally spend all day doing it. Every day. And get paid to not have kids leaving their specialist kid hair cutting salon looking like a dogs breakfast.

They, uh, have dealt with a bazillion kids who won’t sit still...

Buy some cordless clippers and attach a number 8 or 12 comb and then run it all over. It will give him an even looking cut with a shortish fringe but will be fine.
Or go to the hairdressers. 😉

Kid’s hairdressers. They work quickly and distract the child. I go to Trotters. There are a few of them in the South East if that’s where you’re based.

The main point of the haircut was to get it out of DS's eyes and you have achieved that.
It is much easier if your child has wavy hair ie it is more forgiving. I could cut DD's hair for years as it was wavy, I just aimed for a longish short back and sides and it was fine until she started to want to grow it grr
My older DS had masses of dead straight hair and went to barber regularly from under 1 so he really knew no different and just accepted it.
My other DS was about 2 when he started having his coarse straight hair cut.... I expected ructions but in fact he sat peacefully and quietly in the barber's chair struck silent I think by fear!
If your DS isn't ready , let it grow long for now, many people don't cut their daughters' hair after all.

Works with toddlers too

Kids hairdresser. Ours has Cara that they sit in and they can watch Peppa Pig. DS moved his head a lot but she moved like a ninja and gave him a really neat haircut with no injuries in about 30 seconds. DH and I stood there in silent admiration.

Thanks everyone. Message received! I’ll take him to a children’s hairdresser, just need to find one now. Not sure I should take him now to see if they can rectify my mistake or wait for it to grow out then take him?

I put it off for ages as I thought my DS would never stay still, but once I found one where they have TVs and sit in cars and the hairdressers are really quick - it was fine!

I am forever grateful that our nursery have a hairdresser that visits once a month. I send £6 in with him and he comes home with lovely hair. Apparently she doesn’t even use tv to distract them. I suspect she must use some form of sedative instead.

Take him now - you don't want him with a Mum Cut in all your photos over Christmas. I had to take my DS when DH decided to give his lovely long surfer hair a 'trim' and cut it on such a slant that it was about three inches longer on one side than the other, and the hairdresser was brilliant and sorted it out in no time.

Your child won't sit still? I think that needs working on tbh.

Hairdressers will be quite used to sorting out a mum cut.... they may have hysterics out the back when you've left, but they will be used to it. Make an appointment pronto, otherwise you'll have to listen to the rellies guffaws all through Christmas..

I cut my son's hair whilst he was asleep and it was so easy to do. I got away with it until he was 4 & then paid for a mobile hairdresser to come to the house to do it. Get it as short as possible so you've got longer between cuts. It's less traumatic for you both.

DH announced that he could cut DS's hair perfectly well. I took one look at the disaster than ensued and told him to take him out, find a hairdresser and not come back until it was rectified!

He's never attempted a home cut since!

Bad toddler haircuts are a rite of passage!
