Left handed child writing right handed

I'm not sure I'm in the right place but hopefully someone can help.....

My 7yo is naturally left handed, everything he does from kicking a football to eating is dominated by his left hand /foot however he writes with his right hand. I think he has picked this up from watching everyone else (family of righties).

His writing is extremely messy and he always gets his letters back to front. When he writes he always "cups" and doesn't look comfortable. I've tried to show him how to hold the pencil correctly but he simply can't do it.

He then puts the pencil in his left hand and it is far more natural and he says he actually prefers it but his writing is messier with his left hand which causes him concern as he doesn't want to get into trouble at school.

I'm wondering if we encourage him to write with his left hand and practice then things would improve. He's also had assessments for dyslexia but there's nothing too concerning although there is an issue with his processing.

Has anyone any experience of changing dominant (writing) hand in a child?

My DH, my DSS and DH's dad are all dyslexic, play sports left handed (golf, cricket, tennis etc) but write right-handed as did a former Head Teacher I knew who was also dyslexic.

Is he ambidextrous? DH does everything right handed but writes left handed. Both my DS seem to change their dominant hand from day to day.

DS is left handed, writes left handed but shoots, plays golf and does his very intricate job right handed. He can do everything left handed but for some reason doesn't.

I am left handed, right footed, left eyed (as in when I did archery I close my right eye). I cannot write normally with my right hand, unless I am writing on a whiteboard in which case my right hand is better. (Oh and I write really oddly, kind of sideways up the page. I've had people stop meetings to comment on it!)

I think a lot of people are partially a bit of each. It may be the case for your DS.
