Lidl sun cream £2-99 - any good??

For all those of us who are NOT insouciant about sun cream

I've just been to Lidl, and they've got Factor 30 kids' water-resistant sun cream for £2-99. Couldn't resist that price, but does anyone know whether there is any good reason not to use cheap sun cream? Or do the other shops just rip us off ...

We buy our suncream for the kids from Lidl every year - religiously! We tried it one year and it was the best we had ever used. We spent the day on the Beach and dd was as white when we got home as she was when we left. Is it the one in the blue/orange tube? I think if you read the back it is Australian stuff.

I ignore my own inherent snobbery (not saying you are snobby btw, saying I am...) about Lidl and go every month, specifically because I actually rate their makeup removal wipes, their baby wipes, their washing poweder and softener and most of their fridge food above Tescos et al. And yes, despite being cheaper all their stuff seems to be the real McCoy, including Sun Cream. SSSSHHHHhhhhhh don't let everyone in on the secret, they'll put the prices up.......

Wish I had seen this before Saturday when I spent £11 on DS's first sun cream (Johnsons)...would have hot footed it to ASDA/Lidl asap...

one advantage of buying cheaper sun lotion is that you tend to put more on and more often as intended. We all use cream too sparingly so forget to protect backs, legs and shoulders which probably need more coverage than the face and forearms which are exposed to the sun for much of the year

Good news all round! Thanks for the votes of confidence.

And yes IamB, Lidl has just arrived in our town and I am a total convert. Did a significant shop today for under £30, including the suncream and a new doormat. At that rate, who cares if all the labels are in German!

There were 2 varities at my local branch, one for sensitive (which was the colour reactive one) and one for ordinary. I bought the sensitive, will put a tiny bit on dd tonight and see if her eczema flares up.

Ooer, that sounds rather cruel, doesn't it? Dd has v. sensitive skin, though so I would always do a patch test before slathering it on. I won't be wearing a white lab coat and making notes on a clipboard, if that helps...

Well, you'll be pleased to know that dd did not react at all to the sensitive suncream - it's the one in a pale greenyblue bottle and was £2.49.

Used cien factor 50 in Thailand- complete bottle of crap. All of us totally burned, despite regular applications. Not sweat or waterproof at all.
Really angry. Closer inspection, it’s not got a star rating and only protects against UVA. Not worth the risk. Certainly don’t be buying again.

On a whim I purchased Lidl’s Cien anti-age factor 30 suntan lotion 2 weeks ago. Normally my face breaks out no matter what make of suntan lotion I purchase. Whilst wearing Cien I have been horse-riding in 30°c heat and looked like a tomato afterwards but no spots appeared, the same when I’ve been gardening or even sailing. I cannot believe that something so cheap has worked so well. I am delighted and so surprised! My aged, wrinkly, dry but acne-prone skin looks so much better and hydrated as well as protected from sunburn. I am going to buy their suntan lotion for the body when I run out of Ambré Solaire and Nivea.

I'm fairly sure it's UVA rating is higher and that's the one that actually protects against cancer.

Star rating is for UVA or in Europe they just use the UVA in a circle to show it meets minimum UVA requirements , spf shows the amount of time you can stay in the sun without burning. Lidl stuff does protect against UVA and UVB but don't know how the UVA equates against the star rating system

The Aldi one is fab and has a five star UV rating unlike some of the bigger brands.

DD1 can be very easy to get various rashes from different suncreams - Lidl doesn't bring her out in one. Used it all last ridiculously hot summer and no one got burnt once.

At the moment we're using Tesco own make one I think it is just because I needed some and was in Tesco and that seems pretty good as well (smells nice and coconutty). I tend to forget which one we're using at any time because I just fill up all the solar buddy dispensers with it and use them to apply.
