potty training when petrified of potty/toilet

Hi, just looking for some advice or if this is normal. My ds is 3 1/2 so well ready to be out of nappies, he can hold his wee in, he knows when he's going etc. My problem being that he will not sit on the potty or toilet, I've got one of those ladder seats for the toilet, he gets hysterical and somehow has got a real phobia about them.

Yesterday I had him in pants and he held his wee in from 7.30am until 3.30pm when he was so desparate and didn't want to wet himself, but there was no way he was sitting on the potty/toilet to go. I tried to coax him/bribe him/help him (i've tried everything) but he was in a right state. He was cying hysterically begging me for a nappy as he needed a wee, he doesn't see the potty/toilet as an option for him. In the end he just wet himself but didn't want to, I felt so horrible for not letting him wee in a nappy but I know he's ready, we just need to get him over this fear.

I truly believe that the first time he wees on the potty he'll realise theres nothing to worry about but I can't see, without forcing him, how I'll be able to do that. He also ended up with a tummy ache as he'd held it so long.

Sorry for the rambling, I had it so easy with my dd, she just came out of nappies, sat on the potty and was trained within a week. It's just how on earth do I get him to sit on the potty/toilet and actually wee. I would add that he has sat on the potty with clothes on a few times briefly, but if you suggest taking pants down he's off.

have you tried letting him wee standing up (even if its just in the garden to start with)?

It won't solve your sitting down problem (my ds doesn't like sitting down on the potty/toilet and sits for the shortest time feasible!) but it might be a first step to weeing in the potty/toilet.

foxinsocks - I have tried that also, but the minute the potty comes near he freaks out.
