If another child told yours about meat and the meat industry

I saw a post on FB today of a mother having a full blown melt down over the fact another child had explained to their 5 year olds that the cows they see in the field are killed, drained, and butchered, and thats what was in his sandwich. Therefore her child no longer wanted to eat it. She was talking like it was such an outrageous thing to tell him and that somehow the other kids was wrong to tell him. And shockingly all the comments where in agreement with her. This can't be a normal reaction surely?

well, the level of detail is a bit uneccessary imo.

having said that, I think it's important that everyone knows where their food comes from.

Depends on the age of the teller and how and why it was said. Our toddlers have seen animals killed and butchered but they aren't encouraged to discuss it with other kids at school.

YellowLawn from what I gather the other kid said something about beef means you're eating cows. Her kid didn't believe any food could come from animals so they had a whole discussion where he explained how animals get turned in to food

I think it's good that children know exactly what they're eating. Parents who have meltdowns over this need to get a grip and have a reality check!!

I went veggie for 3 years at 14 after a farmers daughter told me how they killed the sheep! Having said that if it was my child that explained I'd pull them up on being rude. No need to discuss with someone how their food was killed they are whilst eating it!

I'm not sure mine has yet made the connection between the chickens in the garden and the chicken on his plate but living in the countryside and having lots of farmer's children as friends it won't be long.

I bet the people up in arms were the sort to buy budget low welfare meat but sign and share half a dozen change.org cow welfare posts!

My two year old has seen me prepare fish and birds. He knows the link between animals and food.

Should be a non issue. Anyone who eats meat has a responsibility to know where it comes from. I remember "testing" my dc very early on: where does beef come from - a cow/ where does pork come from - a pig etc. Dc failed at ham: "er, a hamster?"

I would be fine about it, but it sounds like the other child was being unnecessarily detailed- killed, drained and butchered? Surely just killed or butchered is suffice. What's the draining bit all about other than to gross the other person out.

Well at school we teach our 4 year olds about where our food comes from, and visit a working farm where it is discussed further. So I'd be surprised at a 5yo not knowing. Bad in the parents part - should be just part of general daily knowledge for any child growing up.

Its a common reaction unfortunately. My children have always known about the meat industry because I felt that they should know where their food comes from.

You should have been at the school gates after ds told his entire class that my db was an undertaker and his job involves, amongst other things, draining human bodies and putting make up on them. Apparently 10/11 year old children about to go to high school shouldn't know what happens when you die. I'm obviously not the favourite parent at school

Isadora her kid asked where the blood goes and she said he told him, and she put this in quotation marks " they go upside down like a handstand and cut their neck and all the blood goes down the drain"

Details are not needed at 5 yrs old but my 5 yr old knows ham is pig, burger is cow and chicken is chicken, he knows animals eat other animals as part of the food chain, he knows we mustn't farm food we are not going to eat. He told me himself we should eat less meat and look after our environment.

Slitting throats and blood draining etc is unnecessary imo.
