Very shy 3 year old who won't talk outside the house

My daughter is nearly three. She was slow to start to talk but now talks well to family and people she knows very well. Outside the house (including at nursey where she has been going for over a year)) she is virtually silent, not even saying hello or goodbye or waving. Any suggestions?

amethyst, what have the nursery said about this? a child at my dd's nursery has selective mutism and is getting some support from our borough with this, on-site at the nursery and carers there are aware and are helping her, though I don't know the details.

my ds1 pointed something very interesting out a few weeks ago.....he was the same, not talking to anyone. When I asked him why he wouldnt talk to people, do you know what he said????....'well mummy, you told me not to talk to strangers' ....well he is right!! You spend ages telling them not to talk to strangers then wonder why they wont talk to the little old lady down the road!! Makes sense in a way I suppose!

My dd1 was like this. My heart wrenched for her everytime she went to Nursery. She would just not speak to any adults whatsoever. I have just been on a school trip with her (6 now) and, although she isn't the most popular person in the class, her friends seem to be the nicest and come over to her. Having said that dd2 is the complete opposite and I wish she would just stop talking to all and sundry for 5 minutes!
