Would you monitor your child's internet/tablet/computer remotely?

Hi,
I'm just wondering how you feel about monitoring your child's phone/tablet/computer? I am concerned about the attitude of some internet/social media companies to internet safety and don't feel that my children can be kept safe online even with parental controls on our router. They are still too young to use the internet alone or have their own devices but I am considering what to do when that time comes.
I want them to be encouraged to use the internet and educate them so that they use it safely and responsibly.
I have worked in child protection and seen instances of parents physically checking the phone nightly but even at a very young age children become savvy to this and are deleting messages/apps before their parents can check.
Does anyone go a step further and use spyware/monitoring software to flag up unsafe behaviour on their children's devices? I know many apps have child friendly safety settings but there always seems to be a new must-have app developed in a country where these controls are not in place.
I am conscious that children should also have some privacy but unsure where to draw that line.
