Letting dc go downstairs alone in the morning?

Eldest DD is 4.5 and dp reckons she is old enough now to go downstairs alone on weekend mornings to watch tv for half an hour or so.

Our living room is child-safe with a stair gate on the adjoining kitchen door, but I'm not sure. I remember doing this as a child and loving the 'freedom' of being able to watch what I wanted on tv, but I can't remember how old I was when it started and I feel like she's a bit young still? I just don't feel comfortable with it but I'm not sure if I'm being ott or not. I feel like I might feel comfortable with her doing this at maybe age 6, but 4 is still a bit young?

I suppose it largely depends on the individual child but I was just wondering when others allowed their dc to do this?

I would say it's fine at that age, dependent on:

-the child (how sensible they are)
-the house (not if you have an unsecured television/pond/gun collection)
-how deep a sleeper you are (if you're just snoozing and a cry/crash/call would wake you then fine, not if you're out for the count).

I didn't let mine do this until they were about 7.

My oldest still doesn't do this she's 7, she'd probably be fine but ds 3 would want to do it as well Shock

I let mine have ipad/kindle fire upstairs if I'm snoozing at the weekend (after 6:30am only!) but weekday mornings I take them downstairs give them a snack and leave them while I shower and get dressed. Mine are just 6 & 2.6.

Mine have done this at varying ages it totally depends on the child. My youngest has been getting up for at least a year and either watching TV or just playing and she's 5. My eldest I couldn't trust at that age just because he had a tendency to do daft stuff. So I'd say its down to what your child will get up to!

funny story, I worked in an emerg dept, remote location no dr. on site.
Saturday am a parent carried in their son (4 yrs) concerned about a head injury having fallen in the carpeted living room and behaving strangely.
the child goes on to vomit....
vomit alcohol scented vomitus....
background story reveals parents laid in bed and he was watching tv....having made his own breakfast (cereal) using chocolate milk
the parents didn't have chocolate milk in the fridge but they did have Kahlua :)

Blimey DS7 is only allowed downstairs on without a parent in the morning if accompanied by DD12 or DS11, not on his own.

But then, I know a mum who if fine with her children not only getting up on their own, but also making breakfast, getting dressed and leaving for school. All while she stays in bed. They are 9 and 11 years old now, but she has been doing this for years.

I judge her

Each to their own I guess.
