Were you told you're having a boy, but it turned out to be a girl?

I am pregnant and was told at 20weeks that we're having a boy. I felt pretty convinced that they can't be wrong, but then someone told me a reverse story (they were told a girl, but the baby was a boy). I generally think: if they say boy, they see penis, so it must be a boy, right?!

The only reason I'm asking for your experiences is because I've told DC that they're getting a baby brother, the baby brother's name, etc.

I'm just wondering if I should stop doing that in case it's a baby sister and they get very confused!!!

So: anyone told a boy at 20 week scan, but out came a girl?!

35 years ago my mum was told it was a boy.... She had twin girls :-)

I would assume things are better now I don't know anyone in real life who didn't get what they were told. Check at your next scan but they always say they will never be 100% sure

Scans will never be 100%

There's always a room for error but they are pretty good at getting it right

Both sexes of my children was guessed right and a late scan showed their genitals very clearly. Was no room for error on that

I don't get another scan (only the one at 20 weeks). I don't mind either way, just wonder if I should stop saying "your baby brother" to DC and just say "your new baby" instead! This baby is the only one I've found out the gender beforehand of, so prob why I'm wondering!

If you're that worried could you afford a 3D/4D scan later on in the pregnancy?

All my newborn / first few months clothes are gender neutral, anyway, as my other DCs were "surprises"! Haha

I could do a late private scan, soubriquet, but the end is closeish now so I feel I may as well wait and see!

They can definitely be wrong - they should have told you that they can't be 100% certain. I think it's more likely that they say girl and it turns out to be a boy than the other way around though.

They pretty much said "if we say it's a boy, we're never wrong," Pottering. I mean, I'm sure they weren't. Just when my friend told me the reverse story I started wondering!

We were told "boy" - but that was just based on heartbeat sound. The 20 week scan didn't show anything - even had a scan at around 34 weeks but even then dd didn't give it away!

I do know someone who was told she was having a boy and she had a girl! But it's very unusual. I'm a midwife and all the people I've looked after where they've found out the sex, which must be hundreds, only one was wrong. And that was the other way round - they were told it was a girl, had got all these lovely pink, floral outfits ready and it was a boy.

I was pretty obsessed with this subject through my last three pregnancies.

My experience reading up on gender prediction from about 12 weeks tells me that experienced sonographers very rarely get a boy guess wrong. But it does happen more often the other way around (a 'girl' in fact being a boy).

In my personal experience I have never been told the wrong gender. I was told 'boy' from 13 weeks with my 3 boys. With my daughter it was not certain until 16 weeks.

It was rare enough that it made the news when it happened to Clockmaker's friend. Chances are you'll be fine.

Apparently the sonographers can see what they think is a penis, but are actually mistaken. I still think it is not very likely, however.

I went to antenatal classes with a couple of girls I went to school with. One of then was told she was having a boy but had a surprise when she delivered.

Also within the last three years I have know two others (my cousin and a family friend) have been told it was a boy at an earlier scan for them to suddenly be told it was a girl at later scans.

I have heard of it happening a few times, to be honest. In the same way a penis-shape doesn't mean a boy, likewise the 3-lines don't necessarily mean a girl. If you want reassurance then you can consider paying for a private scan. They are pricey but a lovely experience, and if you've already told your other children one thing, it might be worth finding out sooner rather than later.

Only reason we knew for sure our youngest was a boy was that the angle of the scan left NO room for doubt 😂 (The scan caught the pic as if he was sitting on top of the scanner legs akimbo)

I was so paranoid about this happening! I could have coped with the change of sex but dd1 was so so excited about having a little sister that I was worried about it for her benefit.

I paid for a private scan after my anomaly scan just to double check.

With dd1 I didn't even find out the sex so didn't have the stress. Think I'll do that again when the next dc comes along.

Sister-in-law was told her second born would be a girl and she had a boy.

My "yep it's a boy" photo I wasn't convinced but the second, zero doubt. He's in the pike position so his bits are hanging out for all to see. I've had another scan since and still not shy about showing his bits!

I got told at 20 weeks it's a boy, now I'm 34 weeks and I no longer know the gender anymore, they said that they think it's a girl, I've had to have bloods done to check the gender, so now I'm waiting for the gender to be confirmed from the bloods
