Have been trying to potty train for several months unsuccessfully. Tried reward charts, sweets etc but he is still not telling me when he needs to go and doesn't want to break off from playing. Can manage to get him to wee several times a day by taking him to potty but can't seem to progress this. Am really fed up now!!!!His identical twin brother has been potty trained for months. Am running out of ideas and embarrassed to have the only child at nursery still in pull-ups at this age. Any ideas?

Stop worrying about the nursery, first of all. I had the same with DS2. What worked for him was that we were going on holiday, so we went together and chose a new potty and some exciting pants, and made a big deal about him doing his potty training on holiday. The moment we arrived he went straight to the potty, a couple of days later he was using the loo and doing standing-up wees. He was 3.8 BTW. Not suggesting you book a holiday, but we were definately stuck in a rut at home and needed something fresh to spur him on.

Thanks for the ideas - I think you might be right about using something new as we've been stuck for ages. Sounds like a great excuse for a holiday to me!!

Tess,

Have you tried getting him to do stand up wees?

We had been potty training my DS (aged 3) since August. Up until last week, we also at the point of him only doing a wee on the potty when I remembered to take him. If I left him to tell me he - he wouldn't have - and would just wee himself.

Anyway, I decided last week to get him to try to do a stand up one. He loves doing it; and now sometimes tells me when he needs to go!!!!

We are still having accidents - but we do now seem to be progressing - at last (touch wood!)

Hope this helps
Jenny

Thanks Jenny, its definitely worth a try. At least I know other people are having difficulties with it too - all my friends kids seem to have learnt in about a day at the age of 2!!!!

I know this is an old thread but I'm having the same issues. DS is 3.3 and just won't say when he needs to go. After months of no progress in pull-ups, am now trying cold turkey in pants but he just keeps pooing /wetting himself because he wants to play. He always answers 'no' when I ask and doesn't like me taking him through to the toilet. Have tried potty and standing up but he's equally disinterested. Am trying so hard not to get cross with him but am getting so fed up! Help...
