Would you go to baby group if you had shingles?

I've got a small rash on my hip that was diagnosed as shingles yesterday. I'm due to go to baby sensory today but I'm wondering whether it's wise.

I know shingles is not contagious in itself but that you can develop chicken pox if directly exposed to the shingles rash. Obviously in a room full of under 1s most will not have had chicken pox but as my rash is fully covered under clothes the risk of contact is minimal. I'm also concerned about any pregnant mums there. Should I stay away or am I being overly cautious?

DD is 10 months and these will be her last few classes before I go back to work so I don't want to miss them if I'm being silly. I also don't want to selfishly go to them if it is risky. What do others think?

I think you should stay away - the risk is small yes but potentially significant for example to pregnant women.

TheGonnagle · 08/09/2015 11:24

I would stay away. Dd won't know/care that she's missing it and that way you definitely won't be risking any one else's health. (Immunosuppressed and glad that you bothered to think of others - thank you)

Ok, thought that would likely be the case. Thank you for your replies. I'll find other things for us to do Smile

No I wouldn't. You should stay away.

Its rubbish but I would stay at home. DS was supposed to be at rhythm time today but we both have stinking colds so have stayed away.

Say hello to the sun at home instead and make your own sensory play.

Sun hasn't come out here yet Eminy Sad

We're currently having a mini disco dancing and shaking rattles to the radio.

Nope. Stay away. Someone could be pregnant x
Hope you feel better soon x

Shingles aren't infectious unless you rub your rash into someone's mouth. Or they touch your rash and then put unwashed fingers in their mouth.

At least that's what the Occy health nurse at an nhs hospital told me when dd got shingles and I was trying to convince her I couldn't come into work incase I was brewing chicken pox.

No

lovemakespeace · 08/09/2015 21:21

I would have gone. I dont think there is any way you could pass the virus on (unless people lick you at baby sensory). Too late now though hope you had a nice day anyway :)

purplemunkey · 09/09/2015 10:18

I know you and WhoThe are probably right lovemakespeace but I decided to stay away. I think what TheGonnagle said 'Dd won't know/care that she's missing it' rang very true and I thought rather than worry about it we'll just do something else.

We had our mini disco, lunch and then out for a jaunt around town where she happily babbled away to anyone who would listen. She's happy wherever she is it seems Smile
