does your dc drink enough water? just a thought as my dd and ds's pee never smells so the fact that the pee smells so strong it doesn't come out in the wash makes me think it's quite concentrated.

for my nappies i wash them in soapnuts with a tiny dash of bio-d nappy san and ecover bleach and a few drops of either tea tree or lemongras ouil in the softner drawer and i never have a problem with smell. i run a short rince cycle first to rince the worst out as the normal wash cycle on most machines doesn't use much water so if their not rinced first the nappies are basically washing in concentrated poo and pee.
