My baby smells of beer?!

DH has definitely not taken him to the pub I swear but my 5w old DS smells of beer. It's an acidic smell, a bit like end of barrel student union lager, almost vinegary.
Am I insane or is it just the reward of a EBF healthy baby (along with the mustard yellow poo but I'm not worried about that, I've seen this colour all over Zara SS15 collection)?

Have you checked in the folds under his chin / neck etc? Sometimes they smell....

Cooki3Monst3r · 25/02/2015 23:46

Are you sure it's not a yeasty smell? Like 306235388 said... they can get pretty manky in those little flabby folds of skin.

Thanks! I checked his triple chin, nope, clean, we've just had a bath actually. I think it's his sweat or his poo, I've read EBF babies poo is acid? Weird...

my babys poo smells pretty acidic, not sure id describe it as beer but its pretty weird! i dont know if its normal or not though

Cooki3Monst3r · 26/02/2015 07:53

I have deleted the memory of newborn poo smell. But each of my two had their own smell. DD smelt of warm biscuits, DS smelt a bit spicy. V cute.

Maybe you've just got a beer baby? Grin

ThePowerOfCake · 26/02/2015 08:05

DDs poo smelt of pretzels. There are worse smells!

TheFecklessFairy · 28/02/2015 11:51

My baby smelled like a brewery, and so did our house. Turned out my son (at 5 weeks old) was lactose intolerant. His poo was spectacular.

Is he settled with feeding, does he cry as if in pain?

OhMjh · 28/02/2015 14:10

Behind the ears too!

bluelamp · 28/02/2015 14:18

Yeast infection anywhere? All folds of skin on tiny babies can get manky even with washing, DD2 has stinky armpits for a while until I started consciously giving them a good wipe.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 28/02/2015 14:20

ears, and behind the ears too?

Highlove · 28/02/2015 15:16

Yep, check the armpits and behind the ears as well as the neck.

squizita · 28/02/2015 15:55

My baby's poo smells sweet and slightly acidic (as do her farts). She loves to poo on hcp so a mw, hv, gp and nurse have all seen and smelt her poo and declared it normal.

It could be fart. Smile

squizita · 28/02/2015 15:56

Oh yeah and fold cheese is manky. Mine was small and wrinkly and her pits, neck etc were gross.

TheEagle · 28/02/2015 16:02

DH always swore that DS's nappies (whilst still EBF, before solids!) smelled of balsamic vinegar.

TheEagle · 28/02/2015 16:10

Oh and enjoy that beer smell now while it lasts.

DS is 17mo and his poos are eye watering Grin

CheshireCait · 28/02/2015 16:22

My two smelled of bread and puke at that age, which combined into a beery smell sometimes.

helloelo · 28/02/2015 16:49

Thank you everyone for the helpful suggestions, sounds like it's normal for a BF baby, maybe my milk gives him this smell. We dry him with the hairdryer on low heat after each bath and he still had that smell 1h after bath yesterday. My mum has suggested giving him newborn probiotics as I was given a massive course of antibiotics shortly after his birth and maybe he's having trouble with his gastric flora... Might give it a try although the smell doesn't bother me at all (quite like it now!)

I doubt you need to give anything, I think we all process smells differently, I swear DS poo smells strongly of vinegar, DH thinks it's like off milk or cheese. Baby poo smells strongly of something anyway! When breast fed and drinking expressed milk it was like biscuits, then when we began FF it was more vinegar like.

squizita · 28/02/2015 18:26

Breast milk is more effective at building gut flora than a bought probiotic. .. I'd just continue feeding.

It's harmless if there's no pain. Smile

flipflopsonfifthavenue · 28/02/2015 18:41

My DS2 now 16weeks smelt musty until recently. A bit like damp soil almost. Not entirely pleasant....but it's gone now.

rosedavo · 02/03/2015 22:21

Maybe ask doctor? I know my friends daughter had some problems feeding and puttjng on weight and turns out she is lactose intolerant, like someone else said that made their baby smell of beer?
