My little boy cut his first teeth at around 11 months, these were his top two his bottom two followed straight after but since then there has been nothing. Im not sure if this is linked but he only says people names like mama, dada, nana, baba and kaka, no words? Could this be all linked?

Is he developing fine apart from that? It's normal for some 18 month olds not to say very many words. As for the teeth - I'm not sure what the 'normal' range is. Do his gums feels as though the other teeth are soon to follow? What has your HV said?

Tabeebah · 10/10/2006 10:57

He is developing fine otherwise in my estimations. His teeth dont seem to be cutting but his gums do seem to be swollen but not red. I will see what my HV says. Im more concerned as other biys i know his age have a vocab of at 15 words not including people names and my little one has none.

my neice had no teeth til she was two. it's not so uncommon, apparently. But her speech was normal.

My 17 month old only has 6 teeth but my friends 19 month old has 18 !!
I wouldn't worry about speech Dd2 only says the same words as your son Daddy, mama, yuk oh and the classic one 'Mine' i think that's about all she says.

My Ds is 13 months and got his first 2 teeth a month ago, they were his top fangs! I had never heard of that before, now they are all popping up and has a grand total of six which is not bad for a months work. He can only say the same old babble as mentioned before, im not concerned though.

Spoke with HV who has told me that its not entirely normal but nothing to be concerned about just yet and that i should take him along to the dentist with me for a quick look. And the reason his vocab is small is because he needs the teeth to speak.

From my POV this is absolutely normal, shame on your HV.
My two were like this. Had about 4 teeth by 18 mths. Great eruption of teeth around 20-22 mths. Your boy's speech sounds normal to me too. But then I am not a HV

My Dd had all her teeth by a year, but didnt talk any faster!

I dont know why teeth would make any difference to speech really?
