Hi! I´m a spanish mum of 2 who lives in Withington (manchester). Our little girls speak both English and Spanish, I´ve just returned to work after a career break and we´re currently looking for a spanish speaking childcarer to make sure the spanish is kept up. We were thinking of maybe an au pair but I think the main reason they come to England is to learn english and I´m not sure they´ll be interested´....does anybody have any advise. It´ll be very much appreciated! Anyway Hola! to all the spanish mums!

Hi ... I'm not a mum (I'm a guy) - just came across your message actually googling for information on cognitive linguistic development of children as I want to know just how much more difficult it is for say, Chinese people to learn to speak English with "correct" pronunciation at different stages of development and in contrast to after adolescence. But anyway - found your message: I work for Manchester City Council - Sure Start and I would imagine there are over 300 registered childminders in Manchester. You could try ringing Children's Information Service on 0800 083 7921 - and if they cannot help - and if it is a childminder you are looking for, then ask to be put through to Sure Start - Nicola Peak. She probably won't know of Spanish speaking Childminders ... but maybe she will. I know one of the nurseries in Withington/Fallowfield teaches French ... maybe a nursery teaches Spanish also - I do not know. Of course, registered childminders and nurseries cost more money than an au pair. I'm assuming your children are pre-school age. If they are 3 or 4, they can get 5 x 2.5-hour sessions of "nursery education" for free at nursery-education-funded registered nurseries per week for 13 weeks this Autumn term (although normally we require child to be registered by 14th September) - and also, although I'm no benefits expert and I nothing about your circumstances, there is a childcare element to working family tax credits. Anyway - might not hurt to give CIS (children's information service) a call. Good luck, Dave Bayliss

Oh - one more thing (further to my previous message post) ... you can email Nicola Peak on [email protected] if appropriate to your circumstances (I'm [email protected]). Dave.

Hola Giz!

I know a Spanish speaking childminder but she is in London , but with Spanish language becoming more popular you will be surprised at the number of people who could actually understand it. I know at least 3 persons in the nurseries he attend can at least understand what DS is saying, although... having said that, the language in which DS is more proficient is English even when we do not speak English to him!

Have you talked to the Sapnish consulate in Manchester? sometimes consulates offer nursery services for their workers that are available to the country nationals. Or maybe they can recommend you a nursery favoured by them, the place may not be English speaking per se, but with many Spanish speaking children, who knows? maybe they get som practice.

Muchas gracias everyone!

Some great ideas!....we´re in the process at the moment of inquiring about a spanish au pair plus....please wish me good luck as I don´t think I can relax until I know appropriate childcare is sorted for my little girls.
Thanks a lot!

I know an amazing C/M in Horwich, Bolton. She is very fluent in Spanish and has been a C/M for years. She is the one all the other C/M's go to if we have problems. Horwich is junction 6 of M61 if that helps.
