What happens at "Freshers Week"?...... ( bearing in mind im a 'mature'student)

I contacted my uni today to get a start date and was told that although my actual course starts on Oct 2nd, I am expected to go for 'Freshers Week' from Sept 25th. Trouble is that I have changed my hours of work as of oct 2nd and I dont think that my employers are going to be too chuffed that im not going to be around the week before.

So apart from enroling on my course- what else am i expected to participate in during freshers week and is there any part of it that is non-relevant and i can get out of?

Dp's younger brother who started uni last year keeps asking me if im looking forward to freshers week and giggling ( he is 18) - and asking Dp if he is "cool" with me going to freshers week- there isnt some kind of weird inaugration ceremony with naked frolics is there?

Last year fro me (also mature) it involved going to Uni to enrol (a 4 hour queue! ), looking very briefly at the fayre, attending compulsory library vistits, IT inductions etc and not a lot else.

tiredemma do you post on a student nurse forum? I seem to recognise your post ...

In my freshers week they spent the whole time telling us how crap the course was - no really!! We registered (queued for 4 hours in a hot sports hall), got introduced to our modules, got measured for your uniforms, were introduced to being at uni - personal supervisor, disability services, study support services. There was little to no time for free time and all sessions were compulsary although with hindsight I would not have attended most of them.

This year we start lectures in freshers week so its not even a fun week off for us
