Has anyone done or know anything about Doula training?

Hi,
I have done some research on the web for the various doula training courses on offer and I am unsure which way to go as it seems difficult to tell each one apart.
Can anyone on here offer any experience?
I spoke to a woman at British Doulas but she sounded a bit eccentric (well, mad as a fruit bat actually) and it was difficult to get a straight answer out of her and I frankly didn't trust her as a result.

TIA

Was she after birth or pn, see I only did PN as my dp works nights so childcare was a real issue for me, its a shame as in reality thats what i feel most passionate about, don't get me wrong I love PN but when you are cleaning out someones cupboards it gets alittle bit disillusioning

I may very well rejoin after chatting, its been at the back of my mind for a while. My youngest starts pre school 5 ams a week in sept and I really am beginning to wonder where i go from here on in

At the NCT conference during her very emotional speech Davina McCall said quite seriously that she wants to train to be a doula.

MarsLady · 23/08/2006 21:22

Davina's agent said that though Davina likes the idea it's not something that she's considering right now.

Have you looked on www.doula.org.uk?

They have a list of doula training courses. I did the paramanadoula course with Michel Odent and Liliana Jammers. Wonderful.

Are you an active member of DUK Mars?? Do you post there? was wondering if I knew you? Didn't realise you were a doula

pupuce · 23/08/2006 21:28

Quadro - it was birth... Yes I remember now you only wanted PN.
Rubles - I have replied.
All the courses listed on doula.org.uk are very good otherwise they would not be there... you need to figure out what each contain and if they contain what you need.
"Doula UK has put together a comprehensive core curriculum for training doulas. The courses listed below all follow this core curriculum. They are all taught in different places around the UK. Some of the courses focus on or only teach birth and/or postnatal work. Please be sure to read all the courses' descriptions so as to choose the right one for you. They are listed in alphabetical order."

Well my name is reasonably close to my MN name if that helps. Of course you can email me on lovelymarslady at aol dot com and I'll tell you who I am.

Yes I'm a member of DoulaUK. I'm almost recognised. Just got to get a bit more paperwork in and have my interview. I love the work and I've had so much through the site. I haven't even started to advertise yet.

Quadrophenia · 23/08/2006 21:31

Sounds like I'd probably left before you joined, I really miss DUK though , there were some fantastic women on there x

MarsLady · 23/08/2006 21:33

Well I joined in March I think. It's a lovely site and I get so much advice from there.

pupuce · 23/08/2006 21:35

I think i know you are Mars... did you do your course in June 2005?
To think that 4 years ago no one knew what a doula was and now several mumsnetters are doulas or have employed doulas... great progress

Quadrophenia · 23/08/2006 21:39

It certainly is Pupuce and its lovely to hear, my kids love watching Mum plus one

MarsLady · 23/08/2006 21:42

I did my course in December Pupuce. I've bookmarked your website from before. I almost came to the June 6th counselling course but couldn't free up the time. Just trying to work out which one you are.... but think I just need to look on the doulauk site and it should be easy to work out.

I follow all your posts on here with interest though. I'm always looking for tips so that I can become a successful doula.

pupuce · 23/08/2006 21:45

I am Nurturing Birth (no great secret!), I use to be chair of Doula UK and I am in Kent....but I now have no idea who you are ... Never mind
I am off to bed.... lovely thread.... I wish all women (who want to) could get access to a doula it makes such a difference !

SecondhandRose · 24/08/2006 08:03

Marslady, how did you know? Did you come to the conference and follow it up?

pupuce · 24/08/2006 12:30

She knows because Doula UK has e-mailed Davina's agent.
