We had a big family wedding at the weekend, sadly my couisns ds tried to take his own life the day before with an overdaose

My Mum, whilst very concerned, came out with this gem:

'Well, you'd have thought he'd have waited till after the wedding'

wWhilst visiting my mum and stepdad in Lanzarote a couple of months ago, I proudly announce that all my kids sleep a straight 12 hours a night, to which my step dad replies - Thats not good for them, children dont need that much sleep, they shopuld only need around 5 hours

'What do you mean you are going to use terry nappies!!! You'll never be able to cope with the washing'

I pointed out to her that she managed fine with all (6) of us and with the 1st 3 she only had a twin tub and also that I had no intention of a. soaking the nappies b. rinsing them by hand or c. ironing them like she did.

She conceeded the point then .

My Mum was acting all holier than thou at my brothers wedding, talking about parenting and how there were things I did that she did not agree with but she would never bring them up (I suspect they are what she perceives as pandering to my DSs fussy eating etc). I didn't but I really wanted to chip in that I also didn't drag my children up the stairs by their hair when they broke a casserole dish....

Whenever one of mine played up or was difficult my mother used to remark "They're too comfortable. You want to traumatise them a bit more, then you'll be able to control them".
