Oh dear. On revising for a spelling test tomorrow, it became clear that 1/ I haven't been doing enough of my son's spellings with him nightly and 2/ He hasn't got the natural talent for letters and words that I had at that age. He's definitely more a numbers boy but LOVES reading. Just hates writing and spelling really not great. Any words of wisdom appreciated. Please no negative Normas! What can I do about this apart from just getting them properly learnt every night? Letters back to front and slightly jumbled is sometimes a sign of autism or dyslexia, no?

Thanks!

I would make an appointment to see his teacher asap. They are best placed to advise on why he may be struggling in this one area, and best steps to help with issue specific advice.

Don't feel bad. I have friends - well educated, interactive parents - who didn't discover their DD's problem until Year 6!! She masked it very well.
The important thing is, you have picked it up now and can help Smile

It's very normal for a 6 year old to get letters jumbled and back to front. It's also very normal for him to hate writing and no one would expect a 6 year old's spelling to be great. I'd be looking at making it fun for him, playing word games, encouraging drawing, colouring, lego etc, all things that encourage fine motor skills. The difference between kids this age is massive. I was an early reader and writer, as was my eldest son. My 3 younger children didn't read or write until they were 7, and had caught up with their peers by the age of 9 for my boys, and 11 for my daughter.

His drawing, lego skills are amazing. More like that of a 9 year old. Very creative. Excellent fine motor skills. Excellent reading. Just dislikes spelling and can't seem to remember how words are spelt!

DS has one of my old books and on the front of it i have written my name back to front at around 5 or 6 I would guess. I'm not autistic or dyslexic, i think its a fairly common thing at that age

A bus is a bus whether it's upside down or back to front or on its side. They spend years learning this as a toddler then they go to school and all of a sudden with letters and numbers it's a completely different rule!

It can take a while for them to get this and then remember which way all these letters/numbers go - at 6 I don't think it's a huge worry?
