I would just use whatever I normally used. So, brown for me, but if white is what you normally use, use white.

Carmenere · 16/07/2006 17:16

Well if they eat wholemeal, I'd give them wholemeal.

Chandra · 16/07/2006 17:16

Do you mean sending your children with a wholemeal bread sanwich just to avoid other mums muttering about their packed lunch?

Send them with whatever, they would complain anyway.

Twiglett · 16/07/2006 17:18

I'm telling you now .. if you start siding with DH I'm flouncing

... Kids and I always eat wholemeal .. DH insists on having white bread ... kids will eat either (of course) .. but wholemeal is just .. well .. its better

(have just found out I'm a dining out story for him too ... eccentric wife hah hah hah )

don't forget my flouncing threat

got to be wholemeal darling you never know if there's a mumsnet police are round

Hattie05 · 16/07/2006 17:19

You mean you're thinking about what other people think??
I'd make the sandwiches with whatever you normally make fgs! Sod anyone elses opinion.

Carmenere · 16/07/2006 17:20

Does he think it's(wholemeal) cruel or something?

Twiglett · 16/07/2006 17:20

but

now listen carefully here

wholemeal = good, nutritious, higher fibre, tasty

white = plastic

Mercy · 16/07/2006 17:21

Mine will only eat white so it's a non-starter for me.

But very interesting that your dh wants to know!

Twiglett · 16/07/2006 17:21

don't want to be thought of as the kind of mum who gives their kids plastic bread .. not with all the fish fingers, chips and baked beans I chuck down their throats

My dd barely knows that white bread exists, she loves wholemeal and would be perfectly happy with wholemeal. I still don't get it, is he embarrased about wholemeal bread or something?

misdee · 16/07/2006 17:23

i make a mixture, part wholemeal part white flour, so i guess i send them with both?

Chandra · 16/07/2006 17:23

Tell him that refined flour (white bread) makes people crave more sugar, which in turn makes children some what more active and makes them crave even more sugary stuff.

So... in the long term (if you keep away of refined flours, sugars, etc) he will save a fortune in sweets and dentist appointments.

Carmenere · 16/07/2006 17:23

Twig? What exactly is the problem?

Mercy · 16/07/2006 17:24

I don't get it either!

NotQuiteCockney · 16/07/2006 17:25

We only ever have brown bread at home (ok, once in a while fancy weird white bread, but always artisan white bread, iyswim), but both my boys do love white bread of any sort, and will eat loads if they get a chance.

Hattie05 · 16/07/2006 17:25

I get the impression your dh doesn't have a problem, buy you do because you are being a food snob?

Why don't you just ask your children what they want?

SSSandy · 16/07/2006 17:29

In my Annabel Carmel book (practically never used) there are some pictures of sandwiches made by using wholemeal and white. How about that for a compromise?

White on the bottom, filling, wholemeal on the top? Or 3 layers: white, brown, white with 2 fillings? She even has them rolled up and cut into pinwheels.

I only ever use wholemeal but dd murders a baguette given half the chance. How about that? Wholemeal sandwiches - and a baguette and 2 different soft cheeses to keep dh happy.

Uwila · 16/07/2006 17:30

I'm with you Twiglett. My DH likes white bread (and all other sorts of nutritionally deficient foods that I prefer my children not be exposed to -- I'm losong this battle of course). Why on earth give them crap if they will eat the good stuff.

TwoToTango · 16/07/2006 17:33

I use Hovis best of both.

Uwila · 16/07/2006 17:34

Hey, who actually makes the sandwiches?

I'm still trying to think of an argument for white bread and I'm at a loss. Oh, maybe taste. Kids like the soft texture because it's easier to chew. But it's still made out of crap.

WHOLEMEAL WHOLEMEAL WHOLEMEAL

So, you are a dinner conversation topic? Oh, I think I'd be mad about that. But, then I'm easily pissed off these days.

Twiglett · 16/07/2006 17:40

white bread is nutritionally deficient .. but more importantly it tastes like crap ...

I like that my kids like wholemeal (and rye) ..

I'm not a food snob .. I'm quite far from a food snob .. but bread is one of those sticking points for me (makes no sense to give them crap when they'll happily eat the better stuff)
