"My three-year-old has been calling me by my first name for about six weeks. I quite like it, but someone told me it was a sign of him trying to turn me into a friend rather than an authority figure, which would cause problems later. Is this true?"

Discuss. Is it wrong for a 3 year old to want to have you as a friend rather than an authority figure?

my sons call dh and i by our first names most of the time and we care for them and discipline them effectively etc. .not sure i like the implication that because your kids call you by the name they hear everyone else call you, that you will be a bad parent.

My ds sometimes calls me by my first name when there are childminded children present because he's learnt that copying them is a good way to get instant attention frm me Grin

I don't think it's really bad being called by your first name at that age, imo. dd started calling me by my name when she was 10 months and still does at 2 years. she knows not to, but does it because everyone else does. She normally calls me mommy or mama, but uses my name when she hears others do so. When she was about 13 months she used to call me by my name to make me angry as i wouldn't let her do something or took something she wasn't suppose to play with. That stage has passed now, and i think the copying others bit will pass soon enough, especially if i teach her not to do so (hopefully).
